Mae Jemison: From a Curious Child to a Space Doctor Mae Carol Jemison was born in Alabama, USA, in 1956. As a small child, she spent many hours looking at the stars from her grandparents' backyard. Her mother often told her, "Mae, you can be whatever you choose." At the time, very few African-American women became scientists, but Mae did not let this stop her dream. Education Mae was a brilliant student. She entered Stanford University at just 16 years old and studied chemical engineering and African-American studies at the same time. After graduating in 1977, she went on to medical school at Cornell University. During her studies, she also worked as a volunteer doctor in Cuba, Kenya, and Thailand. By the age of 25, she was a fully qualified medical doctor. Joining NASA In 1985, Mae applied to NASA's astronaut training program. More than 2,000 people applied, but only 15 were chosen — and Mae was one of them. She trained for over five years, learning everything from rocket science to survival skills. On September 12, 1992, she finally went into space on the space shuttle Endeavour. With this flight, she became the first African-American woman to travel in space. After Space Mae did not stop after her famous mission. She left NASA in 1993 and started her own company that works on technology for developing countries. She also taught environmental studies at Dartmouth College and has appeared on Star Trek as a guest actor — making her one of the very few astronauts to play in a science fiction show. Today, Mae often visits schools, especially in poor neighborhoods. She tells the children, "It is not enough to dream. You must also study, ask questions, and never feel that you do not belong in any room. The universe is for all of us."
