Saving the Sea Turtles of Yumi Beach For hundreds of years, sea turtles have come back to Yumi Beach every summer to lay their eggs in the warm sand. But in recent years, the number of baby turtles reaching the ocean has dropped sharply. A group of local volunteers decided they had to act. The Problem The volunteers discovered three main threats. First, bright lights from nearby hotels confused the baby turtles. Instead of crawling toward the moonlit ocean, the babies moved toward the hotel lights and died. Second, plastic trash on the beach trapped many turtles. Third, some visitors took photos with bright camera flashes, which frightened the mother turtles and stopped them from laying eggs. Taking Action In 2019, the volunteers started "Project Moonlight." They asked the hotels to turn off or lower their lights between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the summer nesting season. At first, some hotel owners worried that guests would complain. Surprisingly, many guests said they loved the darker, more natural nights, and some even joined the volunteers to watch the turtles. The team also cleaned the beach every weekend and put up gentle signs asking visitors not to use camera flashes near the nesting areas. The Results The results have been encouraging. In 2018, only about 200 baby turtles reached the sea. By last summer, that number had grown to over 1,500. The volunteers were overjoyed, but they know the work is not finished. Looking Ahead The group now visits local schools to teach children about ocean life. "The turtles were here long before us," said Mr. Tanaka, the project leader. "If we share the beach kindly, both turtles and people can enjoy it for many more summers to come."
