EigoPro 1級 読解 — The Economics of Attention

In an age awash with information, the truly scarce commodity is no longer data but the capacity to attend to it. The economist Herbert Simon grasped this asymmetry long before the smartphone made it palpable. "What information consumes is rather obvious," he observed; "it consumes the attention of its recipients." A wealth of information, on this reckoning, breeds a poverty of attention. The consequence is a market whose logic inverts our intuitions: what is abundant is cheap, and what is scarce commands a price. Attention, finite and non-renewable within any given hour, has accordingly become the resource around which an entire economy is organised. That economy is anything but passive. The platforms that mediate our digital lives are engineered, with considerable sophistication, to capture and prolong engagement. Infinite scroll removes the natural cue that once told us to stop; autoplay decides, on our behalf, what comes next; variable rewards exploit the same dopaminergic loops that make a slot machine compelling. The interface is not a neutral conduit but a persuasive instrument, optimised for a single metric—dwell time—because dwell time is what advertisers ultimately pay for. In this arrangement the user is less a customer than a yield, and the incentives of the platform can diverge sharply from the user's own deliberative interests. What feels like free choice is frequently choreographed. What makes the arrangement insidious is that the extraction proceeds largely unbidden. Consent is presumed rather than sought; the harvesting of attention occurs beneath the threshold of conscious awareness, one notification at a time. The cost is rarely catastrophic in any single instance, which is precisely why it accumulates unchecked: an hour fragmented here, a train of thought derailed there, a slow attrition of the very faculty—sustained, voluntary concentration—on which independent judgement depends. The danger, in other words, is not spectacular but cumulative, and it bears less on our wallets than on our autonomy. If attention is indeed the scarce resource of the information age, then the pressing question is not merely how it is monetised, but who should govern its extraction, and on whose terms. That is a question the market, left to its own devices, shows little inclination to ask.

1

Which statement best captures the central argument of the passage?

  • Because human attention is finite while the supply of content has exploded, attention has become the genuinely scarce resource that the digital economy is built to capture and monetise.
  • The principal aim of digital platforms is to inform users efficiently, and any erosion of concentration is merely an unintended side effect of that mission.
  • The chief problem facing modern economies is an oversupply of information, which can be remedied by producing higher-quality content.
  • Attention has always been the scarcest economic commodity, and digital technology has done little to alter how it is valued or exchanged.
Phrase

attention as the scarce resource / monetisation of attention

Choice Analysis

Because human attention is finite while the supply of content has exploded, attention has become the genuinely scarce resource that the digital economy is built to capture and monetise.

  • The principal aim of digital platforms is to inform users efficiently, and any erosion of concentration is merely an unintended side effect of that mission.

  • Attention has always been the scarcest economic commodity, and digital technology has done little to alter how it is valued or exchanged.

  • The chief problem facing modern economies is an oversupply of information, which can be remedied by producing higher-quality content.

The brain's finite capacity sets a hard ceiling on consumption.
例文
  • The economy of attention rests on a deceptively simple asymmetry.

  • What is abundant is cheap; what is scarce commands a price.

C2 では正解が比喩や逆説(a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention)で言い換えられるため、表層の語ではなく論理関係の保存を基準に選ぶ。

2

According to the passage, what does Herbert Simon's observation establish?

  • That the wealth of a society can be measured by the total quantity of information it produces and stores.
  • That an abundance of information necessarily generates a corresponding scarcity of attention, because information consumes the attention of its recipients.
  • That attention can be expanded indefinitely provided that information is delivered in sufficiently engaging formats.
  • That information and attention are independent commodities whose values fluctuate without affecting one another.
Phrase

Simon / information consumes attention

Choice Analysis

That an abundance of information necessarily generates a corresponding scarcity of attention, because information consumes the attention of its recipients.

  • That information and attention are independent commodities whose values fluctuate without affecting one another.

  • That the wealth of a society can be measured by the total quantity of information it produces and stores.

  • That human attention can be expanded almost indefinitely, provided that the information is delivered in sufficiently engaging formats.

Collocation
Reading consumes the scarce attention of the reader.
a poverty of XXの貧困Abundance breeds a poverty of attention.
to give rise to〜を生じさせるSurplus information gives rise to scarcity of focus.
As data grows, focus becomes correspondingly scarce.
Every recipient pays in the currency of attention.
例文
  • Simon framed the trade

off decades before the smartphone.

  • What information consumes is rather obvious, he wrote.

  • It consumes the attention of those who receive it.

  • Hence a glut of one implies a famine of the other.

3

What does the passage suggest about platform design and the user's interests?

  • Users freely choose how long to remain engaged, and platform architecture exerts no measurable influence on their behaviour.
  • Platform designers consistently prioritise user well-being, calibrating features to protect deliberate, reflective thought.
  • The conflict between platforms and users is purely accidental, arising from technical limitations rather than commercial design.
  • Platforms are deliberately engineered to prolong engagement, so their incentives can run counter to the user's own deliberative interests.
Phrase

engineered for engagement / misaligned incentives

Choice Analysis

Platforms are deliberately engineered to prolong engagement, so their incentives can run counter to the user's own deliberative interests.

  • Platform designers consistently prioritise user well-being, calibrating features to protect deliberate, reflective thought.

  • The conflict between platforms and users is purely accidental, arising from technical limitations rather than commercial design.

  • Users freely choose how long to remain engaged, and platform architecture exerts no measurable influence on their behaviour.

Collocation
to be engineered for〜のために設計されるFeeds are engineered for maximal dwell time.
Misaligned incentives pit profit against well-being.
to run counter to〜に反するThe design runs counter to the user's interests.
Variable rewards exploit the brain's dopamine loops.
Every metric optimises for dwell time.
例文
  • Infinite scroll removes the natural stopping cue.

  • Autoplay decides for you what comes next.

  • The interface is not neutral; it is persuasive by design.

  • What feels like choice is often choreographed.
