EigoPro 準1級 読解 — The Gig Economy

Few labour-market trends have been sold to the public as energetically as the so-called gig economy. Its champions—often the platforms that profit from it—describe a world in which workers are liberated from the rigid nine-to-five, choosing when, where, and how much to work. A driver can log off to attend a child's recital; a designer can take on three clients or thirty. Framed this way, the rise of app-mediated, task-based labour looks like an unambiguous expansion of human freedom. Yet the rhetoric of flexibility obscures a quieter transfer of risk. When a worker is classified not as an employee but as an "independent contractor," the firm sheds its obligation to provide a minimum wage, paid leave, pensions, and insurance. The much-celebrated freedom to choose one's hours coexists, for many, with the grim necessity of working as many hours as possible simply to make ends meet. Flexibility, in other words, is not evenly distributed: it is a genuine benefit for the moonlighting professional and a euphemism for precarity for the worker who has no other option. Defenders counter that gig platforms have opened the labour market to people whom traditional employment excluded—students, carers, the disabled, those re-entering the workforce. This is not a trivial point, and it would be dishonest to dismiss it. The deeper question, however, is whether flexibility and security must be treated as a trade-off at all. Several jurisdictions are now experimenting with a third category of worker, entitled to certain protections without the full apparatus of employment. The gig economy, then, need not be accepted or rejected wholesale; the more useful task is to ask who bears its risks, and whether that distribution can be made fairer.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • The gig economy's promised flexibility masks an uneven shifting of risk onto workers, and the real challenge is to distribute that risk more fairly.
  • The gig economy is a fraudulent scheme that benefits no one except the platforms that run it.
  • Gig platforms have completely solved the problem of excluding marginalised groups from work.
  • Traditional nine-to-five employment should be abolished in favour of app-based work.
Phrase

Flexibility ... is a genuine benefit for the moonlighting professional and a euphemism for precarity for the worker who has no other option.

Choice Analysis

The gig economy's promised flexibility masks an uneven shifting of risk onto workers, and the real challenge is to distribute that risk more fairly.

  • The whole gig economy is nothing but a fraudulent scheme which benefits no one at all except the very platforms that run it.

  • Traditional nine-to-five employment ought to be abolished entirely and replaced everywhere by app-based work of every kind.

  • The gig platforms have by now completely solved the whole problem of excluding the marginalised groups from any kind of work.

argumentative essay の主旨は最終段の問い直し文 (the more useful task is to ask ...)

According to the passage, what happens when a worker is classified as an "independent contractor"?

  • The worker is legally barred from taking on more than one client.
  • The platform takes full legal responsibility for the worker's pension.
  • The worker is guaranteed a higher hourly wage than a regular employee.
  • The company is no longer obliged to provide benefits such as a minimum wage, paid leave, and insurance.
Phrase

the firm sheds its obligation to provide a minimum wage, paid leave, pensions, and insurance

Choice Analysis

The company is no longer obliged to provide benefits such as a minimum wage, paid leave, and insurance.

正解

第2段で『労働者が employee ではなく independent contractor に分類されると、firm sheds its obligation to provide a minimum wage, paid leave, pensions, and insurance』と明言する。

  • The worker is guaranteed a considerably higher hourly wage than any regular employee is.

  • The platform itself takes on the full legal responsibility for the worker's own pension.

  • The worker is legally barred from ever taking on more than one single client at a time.

  • Independent contractors rarely receive paid leave.

  • It acknowledges as a real point that the platforms open work to people whom traditional employment excluded.
  • It dismisses their argument as entirely dishonest and without merit.
  • It claims that defenders deny gig work involves any flexibility at all.
Phrase

Choice Analysis

It acknowledges as a real point that the platforms open work to people whom traditional employment excluded.

正解

第3段で defenders の主張『gig platforms have opened the labour market to people whom traditional employment excluded (学生・介護者・障害者・復職者)』を紹介し、This is not a trivial point, and it would be dishonest to dismiss it と続ける。

  • It dismisses their whole argument as being entirely dishonest and quite without any real merit.

  • It claims that the defenders deny that gig work ever involves any real flexibility whatsoever.

  • It argues that the defenders' one real concern is the maximising of the platforms' profits.
