In 1901, sponge divers off the Greek island of Antikythera hauled up a corroded lump of bronze and wood from a Roman-era shipwreck. For decades it was dismissed as an unremarkable curiosity, too eroded to interpret. Only in the second half of the twentieth century, as X-ray and later computed-tomography imaging peered beneath its calcified surface, did the object reveal an astonishing secret: it was a geared analogue computer, built around the second century BCE, capable of predicting the positions of the sun and moon and the timing of eclipses. What makes the Antikythera Mechanism so confounding is not merely its existence but its sophistication. Its bronze gearwheels—at least thirty of them, some with teeth barely a millimetre across—were arranged to model the irregular motion of the moon, a subtlety that betrays a deep grasp of astronomy. No comparable device survives from the following millennium. When intricate geared clocks finally reappeared in medieval Europe, they did so as if from nothing, with no evident lineage back to the Greek world. The mechanism therefore stands as a tantalising anomaly: a peak of engineering that left, so far as we can tell, no successors. It is tempting to read the device as proof that the ancients were on the verge of an industrial revolution that history somehow denied them. Yet most scholars resist that romance. The mechanism was almost certainly a luxury instrument for an astronomical elite, not a tool of mass production, and a single ingenious artefact does not amount to a tradition of innovation. Its true lesson may be more sobering: that knowledge, however brilliant, is fragile. Without institutions to transmit it—schools, workshops, a culture that prizes and copies such work—even the most remarkable achievement can vanish, leaving later generations to reinvent it, or to gape at its ruins and wonder.
