EigoPro 準1級 読解 — The Healing Power of Nature

The Japanese coined the term shinrin-yoku, or "forest bathing," in the 1980s to describe the deceptively simple act of spending unhurried time among trees. To Western ears the phrase once sounded like wellness marketing, a soothing label with no substance behind it. Yet over the past two decades a growing body of research has lent the practice an unexpected scientific credibility, suggesting that contact with green space confers measurable benefits on both body and mind. The evidence is striking. Studies report that even brief walks in woodland can lower cortisol, the body's principal stress hormone, while slowing the pulse and reducing blood pressure. Some researchers attribute part of this effect to phytoncides, the airborne compounds that trees emit to defend themselves against insects; inhaling them, the theory goes, stimulates the immune system. Others are more cautious, noting that simply being away from traffic, screens, and the relentless demands of urban life may account for much of the improvement. Whatever the mechanism, the direction of the findings is consistent: people who spend regular time in natural settings tend to report lower anxiety and sharper concentration than those who do not. What makes this research more than a curiosity is its bearing on public health. As cities swell and populations age, the chronic stress and mental fatigue of urban living impose an enormous, if largely invisible, burden. If a stroll through a park can ease that burden at virtually no cost, then green space ceases to be a mere amenity and becomes a form of preventive medicine. Some urban planners have already begun to treat parks and tree-lined streets as infrastructure as essential as roads or hospitals. None of this is to romanticise nature or to suggest that a forest can substitute for proper medical care. The benefits are modest and the studies imperfect, often relying on small samples and self-reported data. But the cumulative weight of the evidence is hard to dismiss, and the prescription it implies is refreshingly accessible: to feel better, sometimes the wisest thing is simply to step outside.

Choice Analysis

Mounting evidence suggests that time in green space offers genuine health benefits with real implications for public health.

第1段の confers measurable benefits on both body and mind と第3案の bearing on public health が核なので、「増えつつある証拠が緑地で過ごす効果を示し、公衆衛生に意味を持つ」が主旨。

  • Forest bathing has by now been proven to cure all the major illnesses caused by urban living.

  • The Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku is really little more than a piece of very clever wellness marketing.

  • can fully replace conventional medical treatment

Choice Analysis

Lower levels of cortisol, a slower pulse, and reduced blood pressure.

正解

第2段冒頭で even brief walks in woodland can lower cortisol ... while slowing the pulse and reducing blood pressure と3つの生理的効果が並列で示される。
