EigoPro 準2級プラス 読解 — The Two Faces of Volcanoes

The Two Faces of Volcanoes When we hear the word "volcano," we usually imagine destruction: rivers of burning rock, clouds of ash, and people fleeing their homes. Volcanoes can indeed be terrifying. Yet scientists remind us that these same mountains have also given us many of the things we depend on today. Born from the Earth A volcano forms when hot melted rock, called magma, rises from deep inside the Earth and breaks through the surface. Once it reaches the air, this rock is known as lava. Over thousands of years, layers of cooled lava and ash build up to create the tall, cone-shaped mountains we recognize. Some of the most beautiful islands on Earth, including parts of Japan and Hawaii, were created entirely by volcanoes. A Source of Life Although an eruption can destroy fields and forests, the land around a volcano often becomes extremely fertile afterward. Volcanic ash is rich in minerals that plants need, so crops grow especially well there. This is one reason why, despite the danger, millions of people choose to live near active volcanoes. The soil simply produces better harvests. Watching for Danger Because volcanoes can be deadly, scientists study them constantly. By measuring small earthquakes and changes in the shape of the ground, they can sometimes warn people days before an eruption. These warnings have saved countless lives. However, predicting the exact moment of an eruption remains one of science's hardest challenges. Living with Volcanoes In the end, volcanoes show us a difficult truth about nature: the same force that can destroy can also create. As one geologist put it, "Volcanoes do not care about us. Our task is simply to understand them well enough to live safely beside them."

  • Volcanoes have given us many useful things.

    火山は多くの有用なものを与えてきた。

  • We depend on the rich soil they create.

    我々はその豊かな土壌に頼る。

  • They can indeed be terrifying.

    火山は確かに恐ろしい。
