A Life Devoted to Science Some people are remembered for a single great achievement. Marie Curie is remembered for several — and for opening doors that had long been closed to women in science. A Difficult Start Marie was born in Poland in 1867, at a time when women were not allowed to attend the universities there. Determined to study, she worked for years as a teacher to save money, and then traveled to Paris, where she could finally enter a university. She arrived with very little money and often went hungry, but her passion for learning never weakened. Years of Hard Work In Paris, Marie met and married another scientist, Pierre Curie, and together they began to study mysterious materials that gave off invisible energy. Their laboratory was cold and poorly equipped, yet they spent years patiently working with tons of raw material to find tiny amounts of new substances. The work was exhausting and even dangerous, since no one yet understood how harmful these materials could be. Recognition at Last Their efforts were eventually rewarded. Marie became the first woman ever to receive a Nobel Prize, and later she became the first person of any kind to win it twice, in two different fields of science. Despite this fame, she remained modest and continued working, caring far more about discovery than about honors. A Lasting Example Marie Curie died in 1934, partly because of her long exposure to the dangerous materials she studied. Yet her legacy lives on, not only in the science she advanced but in the example she set. As she once wrote, "Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood."
