EigoPro 2級 読解 — Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale: The Lady with the Lamp Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 into a wealthy English family. At that time, nursing was not considered a respectable profession for an educated woman, and her parents expected her to marry and live a comfortable life. Florence, however, felt strongly that she was meant to help the sick. Against her family's wishes, she trained as a nurse — a decision that would eventually change medicine forever. Her chance to make a difference came during a war in the 1850s. Reports reached Britain that wounded soldiers were dying not only from their injuries but also from the terrible conditions in the military hospitals. Nightingale was sent to manage the nursing there. What she found shocked her: the hospitals were dirty and crowded, and there was little clean water or fresh air. More soldiers were dying from diseases caught in the hospital than from wounds received in battle. Nightingale set to work at once. She insisted on cleaning the wards, opening windows, and washing patients' clothes and bedding. She kept careful records and used simple charts to show how these changes reduced the number of deaths. At night, she walked through the dark wards carrying a small lamp to check on her patients, which earned her the famous nickname "the Lady with the Lamp." After the war, Nightingale used the respect she had gained to push for lasting reform. She wrote books, advised governments, and in 1860 opened a training school that helped turn nursing into a skilled and honored profession. Her use of statistics to prove her ideas was, for its time, remarkably modern. Today she is remembered not simply as a kind woman with a lamp, but as a determined reformer whose careful evidence saved countless lives.
