The earliest version of the internet was created in the United States in the late 1960s. It was not designed for ordinary people at all. Instead, it was built to let a few university and military computers share information directly, even if part of the system stopped working. For about twenty years, this network remained a tool used mainly by scientists and researchers, who used it to exchange data and messages. Everything changed at the start of the 1990s, with the invention of the World Wide Web. This made the internet far easier to use, allowing people to move between pages of text and pictures simply by clicking on links. Soon afterwards, the first web browsers appeared, and ordinary people began to go online in huge numbers. Companies quickly realised the possibilities, and the internet grew from a quiet academic network into a global marketplace and meeting place. Today the internet continues to change at remarkable speed. Most people now carry it in their pockets, on phones more powerful than the computers that once filled entire rooms. This has brought enormous benefits, but also new problems, from the spread of false information to worries about privacy. Like any powerful tool, the experts remind us, the internet is shaped by how we choose to use it — and that choice belongs to all of us.
