EigoPro 2級 読解 — Robots in Our Lives

Robots in Our Lives The word "robot" often brings to mind the walking, talking machines of science-fiction films. The real robots that are quietly changing our world, however, usually look nothing like that. Most are simply machines, often without any human shape at all, built to perform particular tasks more quickly, cheaply, or safely than a person could. Robots are already hard at work in many places. In factories, robotic arms put cars together with a speed and accuracy that no human worker could match. In hospitals, robots help surgeons perform delicate operations and carry supplies along busy corridors. They are sent to places too dangerous for people, such as the inside of damaged nuclear plants or the deep ocean floor. In some homes, small robots already clean the floor while their owners are out. As robots become more capable, many people worry about their jobs. If a machine can do a task faster and more cheaply, why would a company continue to pay a human being? History offers a complicated answer. It is true that machines have always replaced certain kinds of work; yet they have also created entirely new jobs that no one could have imagined before. The factory worker of the past became the computer programmer of today. Most experts believe the best future is one in which robots and people work together, each doing what they do best. Robots are excellent at jobs that are repetitive, dangerous, or require great precision. Humans, on the other hand, remain far better at tasks that need creativity, judgement, and a real understanding of other people. The challenge for society is to make sure that the benefits of these clever machines are shared widely, rather than enjoyed by only a few.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Robots exist only in science-fiction films, not real life.
  • Most real robots look exactly like walking, talking humans.
  • Real robots are task machines changing our world, raising both benefits and concerns.
  • Robots are useless and perform no real tasks.
Phrase

real robots usually look nothing like that ... built to perform particular tasks

Choice Analysis

Real robots are task machines changing our world, raising both benefits and concerns.

正解

第1段落 "The real robots ... usually look nothing like that ... built to perform particular tasks more quickly, cheaply, or safely" が主旨の起点。 bring to mind ~ = 「〜を思い起こさせる」、look nothing like ~ = 「〜と全く似ていない」。

  • Most real robots today look exactly like walking and talking human beings.

  • Robots exist only in science-fiction films and never in real life at all.

= SF映画の中だけに存在 ━ 本文 "already hard at work in many places" と矛盾。

  • Robots are useless machines and perform no real tasks at all in the world.

Collocation
bring to mind ~〜を思い起こさせるbrings to mind
look nothing like ~〜と全く似ていないlook nothing like that
perform a task作業を行うperform particular tasks
a human shape人の形without any human shape
quietly change ~静かに〜を変えるquietly changing our world
例文
  • Real robots are usually just machines.

  • They look nothing like film robots.

  • They perform particular tasks.

主旨設問の鉄則 ―― "often brings to mind X ... The real robots ... look nothing like that" の通念修正が主旨の起点。

2

Where are robots already at work, according to the passage?

  • Robots cannot be used in factories at all.
  • Robots work in factories, hospitals, dangerous sites, and even some homes.
  • Robots refuse to go to any dangerous places.
  • Robots are used only in science laboratories.
Phrase

factories, hospitals, dangerous places, homes

Choice Analysis

Robots work in factories, hospitals, dangerous sites, and even some homes.

正解

第2段落 "In factories, robotic arms put cars together ... In hospitals, robots help surgeons ... sent to places too dangerous for people, such as ... damaged nuclear plants or the deep ocean floor ... small robots already clean the floor" より、活躍の場 = 工場・病院・危険な場所・家庭put ~ together = 「〜を組み立てる」、too ~ for ... = 「…

  • Robots are used only inside science laboratories at universities.

  • Robots are never sent to any of the dangerous places people avoid.

= 危険な場所へは行かない ━ 本文 "sent to places too dangerous for people" と逆。

  • Robots cannot be used inside factories or in hospitals at any time.

Collocation
perform an operation手術を行うperform delicate operations
too ~ for ...…には〜すぎるtoo dangerous for people
the ocean floor海底the deep ocean floor

例文
  • Robotic arms build cars in factories.

  • Robots help surgeons in hospitals.

  • They go to dangerous places.

活躍の場設問の鉄則 ―― "hard at work in many places" 以下の列挙 (factories/hospitals/dangerous/homes) を拾う。

3

What does history suggest about machines and jobs?

  • Machines replace some jobs but also create new ones no one expected.
  • New technology has never changed the kinds of jobs people do.
  • Companies always prefer to pay humans rather than use machines.
  • Machines have only ever destroyed jobs and never created any.
