EigoPro 2級 読解 — Understanding Earthquakes

Understanding Earthquakes To us, the ground beneath our feet feels perfectly solid and still. In reality, the surface of the Earth is broken into enormous pieces, called plates, that float on hot, soft rock far below. These plates are always moving, though usually far too slowly for us to notice. It is this slow, restless movement that lies behind one of nature's most frightening events: the earthquake. The plates do not slide past one another smoothly. Instead, their rough edges often lock together, while the rest of the plate keeps pushing. Pressure builds up over many years, like a spring being slowly squeezed. Finally, the rock can take no more, and the plates suddenly jerk into a new position. This sudden release of energy travels through the ground as waves, shaking everything on the surface. Most earthquakes happen near the edges of the plates, which is why some parts of the world experience them far more often than others. A large earthquake can be terribly destructive, especially in crowded cities. Falling buildings, fires, and giant ocean waves called tsunamis can take many lives in moments. Unlike storms, which can be seen coming, earthquakes still cannot be predicted with any accuracy. Scientists can say which areas are at risk over long periods, but they cannot yet warn people of the exact day or hour that an earthquake will strike. Because we cannot prevent or predict them, the best protection is preparation. In countries where earthquakes are common, buildings are now designed to sway gently rather than break, and children practise what to do when the ground starts to shake. Simple steps, such as keeping water and supplies ready at home, can save lives. We may never be able to control the restless Earth, but we can learn to live more safely upon it.

1

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Earthquakes happen equally everywhere on Earth.
  • Earthquakes can now be predicted to the exact hour.
  • The ground is completely solid and never moves at all.
  • Moving plates cause earthquakes, which we cannot predict, so preparation is key.
Phrase

this slow, restless movement lies behind ... the earthquake

Choice Analysis

Moving plates cause earthquakes, which we cannot predict, so preparation is key.

正解

第1段落 "the surface of the Earth is broken into enormous pieces, called plates ... It is this slow, restless movement that lies behind ... the earthquake" が主旨の起点。 lie behind ~ = 「〜の背後にある」、float on ~ = 「〜の上に浮く」。

  • The ground is completely solid, and the plates below never move at all.

  • Earthquakes can now be predicted to the exact hour and place.

= 正確な時刻まで予測できる ━ 本文 "cannot be predicted with any accuracy" と矛盾。

  • Earthquakes happen equally often in every part of the Earth.

= 地震は地球上どこでも均等に起きる ━ 本文 "some parts ... far more often than others" と矛盾。

Collocation
lie behind ~〜の背後にあるlies behind ... the earthquake
be broken into ~〜に分かれるbroken into enormous pieces
float on ~〜の上に浮くfloat on hot, soft rock
too ... for us to V〜には…すぎるtoo slowly for us to notice
restless movement絶え間ない動きthis slow, restless movement
例文
  • The Earth's surface is broken into plates.

  • These plates are always moving.

  • Their movement causes earthquakes.

主旨設問の鉄則 ―― "this slow, restless movement that lies behind ... the earthquake" が主旨の起点。

2

How do earthquakes happen, according to the passage?

  • Plates always slide past each other smoothly and gently.
  • Pressure disappears quickly without ever building up.
  • Earthquakes release no energy into the ground.
  • Plate edges lock, pressure builds up, then the rock suddenly slips and shakes the ground.
Phrase

rough edges lock together, pressure builds, then plates suddenly jerk

Choice Analysis

Plate edges lock, pressure builds up, then the rock suddenly slips and shakes the ground.

正解

第2段落 "their rough edges often lock together, while the rest of the plate keeps pushing. Pressure builds up over many years ... the rock can take no more, and the plates suddenly jerk into a new position. This sudden release of energy travels through the ground as waves" より、原因の仕組み = 縁が噛み合い圧力が蓄積→突然ずれてエネルギー解放→地表が揺れるlock together = 「噛み合う」、build up = 「蓄積する」、jerk = 「急に動く」。

  • The plates always slide past each other smoothly, without ever locking.

= プレートは常に滑らかにすれ違う ━ 本文 "do not slide past one another smoothly" と矛盾。

  • Pressure disappears quickly at the edges of the plates without ever building up.

= 圧力は蓄積せず素早く消える ━ 本文 "Pressure builds up over many years" と矛盾。

  • Earthquakes release no energy at all into the surrounding ground.

Collocation
Pressure builds up
take no moreもう耐えられないcan take no more
a release of energyエネルギーの解放release of energy
例文
  • Plate edges lock together.

  • Pressure builds up over years.

  • Then the rock suddenly slips.

原因の仕組み設問の鉄則 ―― "do not slide ... smoothly. Instead, ... lock together ... Pressure builds up ... suddenly jerk" の連鎖を追う。

3

What does the passage say about the danger and prediction of earthquakes?

  • Earthquakes are harmless and rarely cause any damage.
  • Earthquakes can be very destructive and still cannot be predicted accurately.
  • Earthquakes can always be seen coming, like storms.
  • Scientists can predict the exact hour of an earthquake.
Phrase

destructive; tsunamis; cannot be predicted with accuracy

Choice Analysis

Earthquakes can be very destructive and still cannot be predicted accurately.

正解

第3段落 "A large earthquake can be terribly destructive ... Falling buildings, fires, and ... tsunamis can take many lives ... earthquakes still cannot be predicted with any accuracy ... cannot yet warn people of the exact day or hour" より、被害と予測 = 非常に破壊的で、正確な予測はまだ不可能unlike ~ = 「〜と違って」、at risk = 「危険にさらされて」。

  • Earthquakes are harmless and rarely cause damage to buildings.

  • Scientists can now predict the exact hour and place of a large earthquake.

= 正確な時刻を予測できる ━ 本文 "cannot ... warn ... of the exact day or hour" と矛盾。

  • Earthquakes can always be seen coming days ahead, like storms.

= 嵐のように来るのが見える ━ 本文 "Unlike storms, which can be seen coming" と逆。

Collocation
