EigoPro 2級 読解 — Rivers of Ice

Rivers of Ice High in the world's mountain ranges, and across the polar regions, lie enormous bodies of slowly moving ice called glaciers. Although they may look completely still, glaciers actually flow downhill like extremely slow rivers, carving valleys and shaping the land over thousands of years. Many of the world's most dramatic landscapes — deep valleys, sharp mountain peaks, and chains of lakes — were created by the patient work of ancient ice. A glacier forms in places where more snow falls in winter than melts in summer. Year after year, new layers of snow press down on the old ones, squeezing them into dense ice. When the ice becomes thick and heavy enough, it begins to move under its own weight. Some glaciers travel only a few centimetres a day, while others, under the right conditions, can move several metres. Glaciers are far more than spectacular scenery. In many parts of the world, they act as natural water towers. Snow that falls in the cold season is stored as ice and then released gradually as meltwater during warmer months, feeding rivers exactly when farms and cities need water most. Hundreds of millions of people in Asia and South America depend on rivers that begin in glaciers, often without ever seeing the ice itself. This is why scientists watch glaciers so closely today. Rising global temperatures are causing glaciers to shrink at a worrying speed; many have already lost a large part of their ice, and some have disappeared entirely. When a glacier vanishes, the river it once fed becomes smaller and less reliable. Researchers say glaciers are one of the clearest signals of a changing climate — a slow-moving warning, written in ice, that the planet is getting warmer.

1

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Glaciers have no connection to the water people use.
  • Glaciers exist only at the North and South Poles.
  • Glaciers shape the land, supply water to millions, and warn us of climate change.
  • Glaciers are completely still and never move at all.
Phrase

Choice Analysis

Glaciers shape the land, supply water to millions, and warn us of climate change.

a body of ~ = 「〜の塊」、signal = 「兆候・信号」。

  • Glaciers are completely still masses of ice, and they never move at all.

  • Glaciers exist only at the North and South Poles, far from any people.

= 両極にしか存在しない ━ 本文 "High in the world's mountain ranges" と矛盾。

  • Glaciers have no connection at all to the water that people use daily.

2

How does a glacier form and begin to move?

  • All glaciers move at exactly the same speed.
  • Glaciers are pushed forward by strong ocean waves.
  • Glaciers form where summer melting is greater than winter snowfall.
  • Layers of snow are pressed into dense ice, which then moves under its own weight.
Phrase

layers of snow press down, squeezing them into dense ice; it moves under its own weight

Choice Analysis

Layers of snow are pressed into dense ice, which then moves under its own weight.

正解

第2段落 "new layers of snow press down on the old ones, squeezing them into dense ice. When the ice becomes thick and heavy enough, it begins to move under its own weight" より、形成 = 雪の層の圧縮 → 自重で移動press down on ~ = 「〜を押し付ける」、under its own weight = 「自重で」。

  • Glaciers form in places where summer melting is greater than winter snowfall.

= 夏の融解が冬の降雪を上回る場所で形成 ━ 本文 "more snow falls in winter than melts in summer" と逆。

  • Glaciers are pushed forward by strong ocean waves and by the winter wind.

  • All glaciers move forward at exactly the same speed, whatever their size.

Collocation

例文
  • Snow layers are squeezed into dense ice.

  • Heavy ice moves under its own weight.

  • Some glaciers move metres a day.

形成設問の鉄則 ―― "A glacier forms in places where ..." 以下 (snow > melt / press / own weight) を拾う。

3

Why are glaciers described as "natural water towers"?

  • They store winter snow and release it gradually as water when people need it.
  • They release all their water at once in winter.
  • They take water away from rivers and store it forever.
  • Only people living next to glaciers use their water.
Phrase

they act as natural water towers, releasing meltwater when farms and cities need it most

Choice Analysis

They store winter snow and release it gradually as water when people need it.

正解

第3段落 "they act as natural water towers. Snow ... is stored as ice and then released gradually as meltwater during warmer months, feeding rivers exactly when farms and cities need water most" より、役割 = 雪を蓄え必要な時期に徐々に放出act as ~ = 「〜の役割を果たす」、meltwater = 「融水」。

  • They release all of their stored water at once in the middle of winter.

  • They take water away from the rivers below and store it there forever.

  • Only the people living right next to a glacier ever use its water.

= 氷河の隣の住民だけが水を使う ━ 本文 "often without ever seeing the ice itself" と矛盾。

Collocation
act as ~〜の役割を果たすact as natural water towers
be stored as ~〜として蓄えられるstored as ice
release ~ gradually〜を徐々に放出するreleased gradually as meltwater

  • Glaciers act as natural water towers.

  • Meltwater feeds rivers in warm months.

  • Millions depend on glacier

    fed rivers.
