EigoPro 2級 読解 — The Silk Road

The Silk Road Long before aeroplanes and container ships, goods and ideas already travelled astonishing distances. For well over a thousand years, a network of trade routes known as the Silk Road connected China in the east with Europe and the Middle East in the west. Stretching across mountains, deserts, and grasslands, it was not a single road at all, but many connected paths along which countless merchants, animals, and caravans moved. The route took its name from silk, the precious cloth that only China knew how to make at the time. Silk was so light, beautiful, and rare that wealthy Romans were willing to pay enormous prices for it. But silk was only one of many goods carried along the road. Spices, tea, glass, gold, horses, and paper all changed hands at busy market towns along the way. Because the full journey was extremely long and dangerous, very few merchants travelled the entire route; instead, goods usually passed through many hands, with each trader carrying them one stage further. The Silk Road carried far more than goods, however. Religions such as Buddhism spread from India into China along its paths. Inventions, scientific knowledge, artistic styles, and even recipes travelled with the caravans. Historians argue that this exchange of ideas may have mattered more than the trade itself, because it connected civilisations that would otherwise have developed in isolation. The Silk Road slowly declined as sea routes became safer and cheaper, and traders chose ships over camels. Yet its influence has never disappeared. The foods we eat, the technologies we use, and the religions people follow today still reflect those centuries of exchange. In a sense, the Silk Road was an early form of globalisation — a reminder that human beings have always been curious about what lies beyond the horizon.

Choice Analysis

Goods passed through many traders' hands, each carrying them one stage further.

Choice Analysis
