EigoPro 2級 読解 — Exploring the Deep Sea

Exploring the Deep Sea We often say that space is the final frontier, yet there is a vast unexplored world much closer to home. The deep sea — the parts of the ocean lying more than two hundred metres below the surface — covers well over half of our planet. Despite this, scientists estimate that only a small fraction of it has ever been mapped in detail. In fact, we have better maps of the surface of the Moon than of our own ocean floor. Exploring the deep sea is extremely difficult because the environment is so hostile. Sunlight cannot reach far below the surface, so the deep ocean is a world of complete darkness. Temperatures are close to freezing, and the weight of the water above creates crushing pressure, strong enough to flatten an ordinary submarine. Any vehicle sent down must be specially built, with thick walls and powerful lights, and even then, missions can last only a limited time. What scientists have found there, however, has repeatedly amazed them. Far from being empty, the deep sea is full of life. Strange fish produce their own light to attract prey in the darkness, a trick known as bioluminescence. Around cracks in the ocean floor, where hot water rises from inside the Earth, whole communities of creatures live without any sunlight at all — something biologists once believed was impossible. Each new expedition seems to discover species that no human has ever seen before. Researchers argue that deep-sea exploration deserves far more attention and funding. New medicines have already been developed from deep-sea organisms, and understanding the ocean is essential for predicting climate change. The deep sea may be dark, cold, and distant, but what we learn there could shape life on the surface for generations to come.

1

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • The deep sea is a largely unexplored world full of life, and exploring it matters greatly.
  • Exploring the deep sea is easy with ordinary submarines.
  • The deep sea covers only a tiny part of the planet.
  • The deep sea has been completely mapped in detail.
Phrase

a vast unexplored world much closer to home

Choice Analysis

The deep sea is a largely unexplored world full of life, and exploring it matters greatly.

正解

第1段落 "there is a vast unexplored world much closer to home" + "only a small fraction of it has ever been mapped" が導入の主旨。 a fraction of ~ = 「〜のごく一部」、frontier = 「最前線・未開拓領域」。

  • The deep sea has already been completely mapped in fine detail.

  • The deep sea covers only a tiny part of the planet and holds very little life.

= 地球のごく一部しか覆わない ━ 本文 "well over half of our planet" と矛盾。

  • Exploring the deep sea is easy and cheap with ordinary submarines.

= 普通の潜水艦で簡単に探査できる ━ 本文 "strong enough to flatten an ordinary submarine" と矛盾。

Collocation
the final frontier最後のフロンティアspace is the final frontier
close to home身近にmuch closer to home
a small fraction of ~〜のごく一部only a small fraction of it
map ~ in detail〜を詳細に地図化するmapped in detail
the ocean floor海底our own ocean floor
例文
  • The deep sea covers over half the planet.

  • Only a fraction has been mapped.

  • We know the Moon better than our ocean.

2

Why is the deep sea so difficult to explore?

  • Sunlight reaches all the way to the ocean floor.
  • It is completely dark, nearly freezing, and the pressure can crush an ordinary submarine.
  • The deep sea is warm and comfortable for divers.
  • Ordinary vehicles can easily survive the pressure.
Phrase

complete darkness, near-freezing temperatures, and crushing pressure

Choice Analysis

It is completely dark, nearly freezing, and the pressure can crush an ordinary submarine.

正解

第2段落 "the deep ocean is a world of complete darkness. Temperatures are close to freezing, and the weight of the water above creates crushing pressure, strong enough to flatten an ordinary submarine" より、環境 = 暗闇 + 低温 + 致命的水圧hostile = 「過酷な・敵対的な」、crushing pressure = 「押し潰す水圧」。

  • Sunlight reaches all the way down to the deep ocean floor.

  • The deep sea is warm and comfortable for divers to work in.

  • Ordinary diving vehicles can easily survive the pressure and the cold down there.

= 普通の乗り物でも水圧に耐えられる ━ 本文 "strong enough to flatten an ordinary submarine" と矛盾。

Collocation
a hostile environment過酷な環境the environment is so hostile
complete darkness完全な暗闇a world of complete darkness
close to freezing氷点近いTemperatures are close to freezing
specially built特別製のmust be specially built
例文
  • No sunlight reaches the deep sea.

  • The pressure can flatten a submarine.

  • Vehicles must be specially built.

3

What have scientists discovered about life in the deep sea?

  • All deep-sea creatures need direct sunlight to survive.
  • It is full of life, including creatures that live entirely without sunlight.
  • Scientists have already discovered every deep-sea species.
  • The deep sea turned out to be completely empty of life.
Phrase

whole communities live without any sunlight — something biologists once believed was impossible
