EigoPro 2級 読解 — The Surprising Intelligence of the Octopus

The Surprising Intelligence of the Octopus If you were asked to name an intelligent animal, you would probably think of a chimpanzee, a dolphin, or perhaps a clever dog. Few people would mention an octopus. Yet scientists who study these strange sea creatures have come to a remarkable conclusion: the octopus may be one of the most intelligent animals on Earth, even though its body and brain are completely unlike our own. Almost everything about the octopus is unusual. It has eight arms, three hearts, and blue blood. More surprisingly, most of its nerve cells are not in its head but spread throughout its arms, which means each arm can taste, touch, and even act partly on its own. An octopus can also change the colour and texture of its skin in less than a second, matching rocks, sand, or coral so perfectly that predators swim past without noticing it. It is the animal's behaviour, however, that has truly amazed researchers. In laboratories, octopuses have learned to open screw-top jars to reach food inside, solved simple mazes, and recognised individual human keepers — greeting some gently while squirting water at others they apparently dislike. In the wild, some octopuses collect coconut shells, carry them across the sea floor, and assemble them into shelters when danger appears. This use of objects is considered a form of tool use, an ability once thought to belong only to humans and a few other animals. What makes octopus intelligence so fascinating to scientists is its independent origin. Our last common ancestor with the octopus lived hundreds of millions of years ago and was probably a simple worm-like creature. This means intelligence evolved in the octopus completely separately from our own. Studying how a creature so different from us can think, learn, and remember may help researchers understand what intelligence really is — and perhaps even how to recognise it if we ever encounter it beyond our planet.

1

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Only chimpanzees and dolphins can be called intelligent.
  • Octopus bodies are almost identical to human bodies.
  • The octopus shows remarkable intelligence that evolved completely separately from ours.
  • Octopuses are far less intelligent than all other animals.
Phrase

the octopus may be one of the most intelligent animals, though completely unlike us

Choice Analysis

The octopus shows remarkable intelligence that evolved completely separately from ours.

正解

第1段落 "the octopus may be one of the most intelligent animals on Earth, even though its body and brain are completely unlike our own" + 第4段落の独立進化が主旨。come to a conclusion = 「結論に達する」、remarkable = 「驚くべき」。

  • Octopuses are far less intelligent than almost all of the other sea animals.

= タコは他の全動物より知能が低い ━ 本文 "one of the most intelligent animals" と矛盾。

  • The bodies of octopuses are almost identical to those of humans in every way.

  • Only chimpanzees and dolphins can properly be called intelligent creatures.

主旨設問の鉄則 ―― "Yet scientists ... have come to a remarkable conclusion" の Yet (逆接) が主旨の合図。

2

What is unusual about the octopus's body?

  • All of an octopus's nerve cells are inside its head.
  • An octopus has one heart and red blood like humans.
  • Most of its nerve cells are in its arms, which can partly act on their own.
  • An octopus needs several minutes to change colour.
Phrase

most nerve cells are in its arms; it changes skin colour in under a second

Choice Analysis

Most of its nerve cells are in its arms, which can partly act on their own.

正解

第2段落 "most of its nerve cells are not in its head but spread throughout its arms, which means each arm can taste, touch, and even act partly on its own" より、特徴 = 腕に分布する神経 + 腕の部分的自律行動nerve cell = 「神経細胞」、on one's own = 「独自に」。

  • All of an octopus's nerve cells are found inside its head and nowhere else.

= 神経細胞は全て頭の中 ━ 本文 "not in its head but spread throughout its arms" と矛盾。

  • An octopus needs several long minutes in order to change its colour.

= 変色に数分かかる ━ 本文 "in less than a second" と矛盾。

  • An octopus has a single heart and red blood, just like human beings.

= 心臓1つで赤い血 ━ 本文 "three hearts, and blue blood" と矛盾。

3

What behaviour shows the octopus's intelligence?

  • They open jars, solve mazes, recognise keepers, and use coconut shells as shelters.
  • Tool use has been observed in no animal except humans.
  • Octopuses cannot learn anything new in laboratories.
  • Octopuses treat every human keeper exactly the same.
Phrase

octopuses open jars, solve mazes, and assemble coconut shells into shelters

Choice Analysis

They open jars, solve mazes, recognise keepers, and use coconut shells as shelters.

正解

第3段落 "learned to open screw-top jars ... solved simple mazes, and recognised individual human keepers ... assemble them into shelters" より、証拠 = 瓶開け + 迷路 + 人の識別 + 道具使用recognise = 「識別する」、assemble A into B = 「Aを組み立ててBにする」。

  • Octopuses cannot learn anything new at all inside a laboratory tank or maze.

  • Octopuses treat every one of their human keepers in exactly the same way.

= 全飼育員を全く同じに扱う ━ 本文 "greeting some ... squirting water at others" と矛盾。
