Cherry Blossoms in Japan Every spring, millions of cherry trees bloom across Japan. The flowers are usually pink or white, and they are called "sakura" in Japanese. Watching these flowers with family and friends is called "hanami," which means "flower viewing." Cherry blossoms usually bloom from late March to early April in Tokyo. However, in colder places like Hokkaido, they bloom in May. In warmer places like Okinawa, they sometimes bloom as early as January. The flowers are very beautiful, but they fall after only one or two weeks. Many Japanese people think this short life makes the flowers more special. During hanami, families and co-workers often meet under the trees in parks. They sit on blue plastic sheets, eat lunch, and talk together. Some people stay until evening to enjoy the flowers with light. If you visit Japan in spring, please join a hanami party. It is a wonderful way to feel the Japanese spring.
