「did」

正解

文頭に否定の副詞句 Not only が置かれると、強制的に倒置が起き、主語(the committee's report)の前に助動詞を出す。一般動詞 misrepresent の現在形・過去のどちらでもなく、後続の drew が過去形であることから時制は過去なので、do 系の助動詞は did となり、本動詞は原形 misrepresent に戻る。but (also) B 側は通常語順(it also drew)に戻る点も C2 では問われる。

「does」
= 現在時制の三単現助動詞 ━ 後続節の drew が過去形であり時制が一致しない。文全体が過去の出来事を述べているため did でなければならない。。
「had」
= 過去完了を作る助動詞 ━ 報告書が誤って提示した行為と結論を導いた行為は同時の過去であり完了の前後関係はない。倒置に呼び出すべきは do 系の did。。
「misrepresented」
= 倒置せず本動詞を過去形のまま置く形 ━ Not only 文頭では助動詞倒置が必須で、本動詞を直接置くことはできない。助動詞 did + 原形 misrepresent が正しい。。

💡Tip · 覚えるコツ

C2 のひっかけは「倒置するのは Not only 節だけ」で、but (also) 以降は通常語順に戻る点。また be 動詞や完了の have は do を補わずそのまま前置する(Not only is / Not only has)。文中位置(He not only ...)なら倒置は一切不要。

「than」

正解

No sooner ... than は「~するやいなや」を表し、文頭の No sooner が過去完了の倒置(had + S + pp)を引き起こす。先行する動作が過去完了、直後の出来事が過去単純形になるのが定型。相関の後半を導くのは比較級由来の than であり、時の when や as ではない点が核心。

「when」
= 「~するとき」の時の接続詞 ━ No sooner の相方は固定で than。Hardly/Scarcely ... when とは混同しやすいが、sooner は比較級なので than を取る。。
「then」
= 「それから」の副詞 ━ 節を接続する力を持たない副詞であり、二つの節をつなげない。相関接続詞の後半標識にはならない。。
「as」
= 「~するとき/につれて」の接続詞 ━ No sooner の定型相方ではない。比較級 sooner に呼応するのは than だけ。。

💡Tip · 覚えるコツ

最大のひっかけは「No sooner ... when」。sooner は比較級なので相方は than 固定。一方 Hardly/Scarcely ... when は when を取る。両者の前半は過去完了の倒置(had + pp)、相方節は過去単純という時制差も C2 で頻出。

💡Tip · 覚えるコツ

鉄則は Hardly/Scarcely → when (or before)、No sooner → than。前半は過去完了倒置(had + pp)、相方は過去単純。Hardly に than を当てる誤りと、No sooner に when を当てる誤りが C2 の二大ひっかけ。
