EigoPro 1級 読解 — The Ghost in the Machine: On the Limits of Knowing Artificial Minds

For decades, the prospect of artificial consciousness has hovered at the margins of respectable science, dismissed as the province of speculation rather than inquiry. Yet as machines grow eloquent enough to discuss their own apparent inner lives, the question has acquired an uncomfortable urgency. The deepest obstacle, however, is not engineering but philosophy. Even if we could replicate every function of a sentient brain, it would remain an open question whether subjective experience—what philosophers call the "hard problem"—accompanies the performance at all. To build a machine that behaves as though it feels is one achievement; to know that it actually feels is another, and the gulf between them may be unbridgeable. The difficulty is that behavioural evidence, however dazzling, is constitutively silent on the matter. A system might answer our every question about pain, longing, or wonder with exquisite nuance, and this would be perfectly compatible with the system's being devoid of any inner life whatsoever. Eloquence is not awareness. No conceivable behavioural test can settle the question, because the very thing in dispute—the presence of felt experience—leaves no signature in conduct that mere mechanism could not in principle counterfeit. We are confronted not with a shortage of data but with the irrelevance of data to the thing we most wish to know. Some respond that we face the same predicament with one another and proceed regardless. True enough: I cannot inspect your experience either. But here the parallel falters. When I attribute a mind to a fellow human, my inference rests on a presumed similarity of bodily constitution—a shared biology that an artificial system, however articulate, does not possess. The argument from analogy, precarious even among humans, grows more precarious still when extended to silicon. We are thus left with what might be called the verification gap: a permanent, constitutive impossibility of confirming the very property whose presence would most profoundly alter our moral universe. A machine could one day persuade us utterly, and the question of whether anyone was home behind the persuasion might never, in principle, be answered at all.

Which statement best captures the central argument of the passage?

  • The principal danger of artificial consciousness lies in its potential to outperform humans economically.
  • Engineers have nearly solved the technical obstacles to building a conscious machine within the coming decade.
  • The hard problem of consciousness exposes a structural limit in our ability to verify whether any artificial system is genuinely sentient.
  • Functionalist theories have been decisively refuted by recent advances in neuroscience and computation.
Phrase

the hard problem; the verification gap

Choice Analysis

The hard problem of consciousness exposes a structural limit in our ability to verify whether any artificial system is genuinely sentient.

  • Engineers have very nearly solved the remaining technical obstacles to building a genuinely conscious machine within the coming decade.

  • Functionalist theories have been decisively refuted by recent advances in neuroscience and computation.

  • The principal danger of artificial consciousness lies in its potential to outperform humans economically.

Collocation
The case poses a deep problem for materialism.
The data fall silent on inner experience.
No experiment can bridge the explanatory gap.
attribute X to YXをYに帰するWe attribute feelings to other minds by analogy.
The question is in principle undecidable.
例文
  • The hard problem resists reduction to mere mechanism.

  • Behavioural fluency need not entail inner awareness.

  • Verification here is constitutively, not merely practically, impossible.

  • We infer other minds only by precarious analogy.

2

According to the passage, why does behavioural evidence fail to settle whether a machine is conscious?

  • Machines deliberately conceal their inner states from human observers.
  • Such evidence is in principle compatible with the total absence of any inner experience.
  • Behavioural tests have not yet been standardised across laboratories.
  • The behaviour of advanced machines is too erratic to be measured reliably.
Phrase

behavioural evidence; constitutively silent

Choice Analysis

Such evidence is in principle compatible with the total absence of any inner experience.

正解

第2段落は、いかに洗練された応答も「a system devoid of any inner life」と完全に整合しうると明言する。

  • The behaviour of advanced machines is too erratic to be measured reliably.

  • Machines deliberately conceal their inner states from human observers.

  • Behavioural tests have not yet been standardised across laboratories.

Collocation
The output is compatible with zero awareness.
devoid of〜を欠いたa system devoid of inner life
No test can settle the question.
We cannot rule out a mindless mechanism.
Behaviour alone cannot account for sentience.
例文
  • The answer is compatible with there being no experience at all.

  • A flawless mimic remains devoid of felt states.

  • No behavioural datum settles the matter.

  • We cannot rule out a purely mechanical zombie.

3

What does the passage say about the analogy we use to attribute minds to other human beings?

  • It has been formally validated by philosophers as a reliable inference.
  • It is the same method neuroscientists use to locate consciousness in the brain.
  • It rests on a presumed similarity of bodily make-up that artificial systems do not share.
  • It applies with equal force to machines and to fellow humans.
Phrase

argument from analogy; shared constitution

Choice Analysis

It rests on a presumed similarity of bodily make-up that artificial systems do not share.

  • It has been formally validated by philosophers as a reliable inference.

  • It applies with equal force to machines and to fellow humans.

  • It is the same method neuroscientists use to locate consciousness in the brain.

Collocation
The inference rests on shared biology.
We grant minds by analogy.
Machines do not share our constitution.
extend X to YXをYに拡張するCan we extend the inference to machines?
take for granted当然視するWe take other minds for granted.
例文
  • The argument rests on a shared bodily constitution.

  • We grant minds to others by a precarious analogy.

  • Machines do not share that constitution.

  • The inference does not extend cleanly to silicon.
