EigoPro 1級 読解 — The Self That Never Was: Philosophy's Search for Personal Identity

We move through life with an unshaken conviction that we remain, in some deep sense, the same person from cradle to grave. Yet philosophers have long struggled to say what, precisely, this persisting self consists in. The body offers an obvious candidate, but it is a poor one: nearly every cell is replaced over the years, and the person who emerges from decades of change shares scarcely any matter with the infant who began the journey. If continuity of substance grounded identity, we would be obliged to conclude that we are, quite literally, not who we once were. Locke's celebrated alternative located identity not in the flesh but in memory: I am the same person as the boy in the photograph because I can, in principle, recall being him. Elegant though this is, it falters under pressure. The memory criterion begs the question—to call a memory mine already presupposes the self whose continuity it was meant to prove. Nor can the gradual, overlapping chain of recollection rescue the theory without quietly smuggling back the very identity in dispute. Refinements that appeal instead to broad psychological continuity—the unbroken flow of beliefs, intentions, and dispositions—fare little better once we press them with imagined cases. Consider the teleportation thought experiment beloved of contemporary philosophers. Suppose a machine scans your body, destroys it, and assembles a flawless replica elsewhere—identical in atoms and memories. Has anyone travelled, or has one person died and a stranger been born wearing his face? The replica would nonetheless strike most of us as a copy, not the original, and that stubborn intuition undermines bodily and psychological criteria alike. Whatever we are clinging to seems to survive neither the loss of our matter nor the duplication of our minds. Perhaps, then, the lesson is not that we have failed to find the criterion but that we have misframed the search. The self may be less a discovered entity than a useful narrative we impose, the act by which we bind disparate experiences into a single ongoing story. Such a verdict is not as radical as it sounds; the Buddhist doctrine of anatta, or no-self, reached a comparable conclusion millennia ago. Far from a defeat, the collapse of every neat criterion may be philosophy's most honest result—an invitation to ask not what the self is, but how, and why, we keep insisting that there is one.

Which of the following best captures the central argument of the passage?

  • Advances in neuroscience have decisively confirmed that the self is located in the continuity of brain matter.
  • Eastern philosophical traditions have always understood identity more accurately than their Western counterparts.
  • Memory provides the most reliable foundation for personal identity once its circularity is properly addressed.
  • No single criterion of personal identity withstands scrutiny, suggesting that the persisting self may be a convenient fiction rather than a metaphysical fact.

the persisting self as a possible fiction

Choice Analysis

No single criterion of personal identity withstands scrutiny, suggesting that the persisting self may be a convenient fiction rather than a metaphysical fact.

最終段落で the self may be less a discovered entity than a useful narrative we impose と述べており、どの基準も耐えられず自己が虚構かもしれないという結論が論旨の核心である。

  • Memory provides the most reliable foundation for personal identity once its circularity is properly addressed.

  • Advances in neuroscience have decisively confirmed that the self is located in the continuity of brain matter.

  • Eastern philosophical traditions have always understood personal identity far more accurately than any of their Western counterparts.

  • The hypothesis simply does not withstand scrutiny.

  • Treating the deficit as temporary is a convenient fiction.

  • Historians impose a coherent narrative on chaotic events.

2

According to the passage, why does Locke's memory criterion fail?

  • Memories are too easily fabricated by the brain to serve as evidence of anything.
  • Locke confused biological continuity with the continuity of consciousness.
  • Most adults cannot recall their earliest years, leaving gaps the criterion cannot bridge.
  • Identifying which memories are genuinely one's own already presupposes the very personal identity the criterion is meant to establish.
Phrase

the memory criterion begs the question

Choice Analysis

Identifying which memories are genuinely one's own already presupposes the very personal identity the criterion is meant to establish.

正解

本文は the memory criterion begs the question: to call a memory mine already presupposes the self whose continuity it was meant to prove と明示している。

  • Memories are too easily fabricated by the brain to serve as evidence of anything.

  • Locke confused biological continuity with the continuity of consciousness.

  • Most adults cannot recall anything of their earliest years, which leaves gaps that the criterion cannot possibly bridge.

Collocation
presuppose the very Xまさにその X を前提にするIt presupposes the very self in question.
call a memory one's ownある記憶を自分のものと呼ぶTo call a memory one's own is itself loaded.
be meant to prove証明するはずであるthe continuity it was meant to prove
The account falls into circularity.
meant to establish確立するはずのthe identity the criterion is meant to establish
例文
  • This defence presupposes the very conclusion it seeks.

  • To call the data reliable is already loaded.

  • The model was meant to prove causation, not assume it.

  • Such reasoning quietly falls into circularity.

3

What does the passage say about the teleportation thought experiment?

  • It demonstrates that personal identity depends solely on uninterrupted spatial location.
  • It proves that consciousness can be transferred without loss provided the replica is exact.
  • It exposes that a perfect physical and psychological replica would intuitively strike us as a copy rather than the original person, undermining bodily and continuity criteria alike.
  • It shows that future technology will eventually resolve the metaphysical puzzle entirely.
Phrase

the duplicate strikes us as a copy

Choice Analysis

It exposes that a perfect physical and psychological replica would intuitively strike us as a copy rather than the original person, undermining bodily and continuity criteria alike.

正解

本文は teleportation 思考実験について、a flawless replica—identical in atoms and memories—would nonetheless strike most of us as a copy, not the original と述べる。

  • It proves that consciousness can be transferred from one body to another without any loss whatever, provided only that the replica is exact in every detail.

  • It demonstrates that personal identity depends solely on uninterrupted spatial location.

  • It shows that future technology will eventually resolve the metaphysical puzzle entirely.
