EigoPro 1級 読解 — The Ledger That Refuses to Balance: The Economics of Higher Education

For decades, the prevailing defence of higher education has cast it as a straightforward transaction: a sum tendered now in exchange for elevated lifetime earnings, a purchase whose value can be tabulated as cleanly as any other on a balance sheet. The graduate, on this reckoning, is a rational consumer, and the soaring price of tuition merely the market's honest verdict on the worth of what is bought. The metaphor is seductive precisely because it is so tidy. Yet the longer one inspects it, the more the ledger refuses to balance. Part of the difficulty is that a degree behaves less like an ordinary commodity than like a positional good—an asset whose worth lies less in what it imparts than in who is excluded from holding it. A credential confers advantage chiefly when comparatively few others possess it; as attainment becomes universal, the very benefit it once promised erodes, leaving aspirants to chase an ever-receding line. This is why mass enrolment, far from democratising opportunity in any simple sense, can intensify the scramble it was meant to relieve. Compounding the problem, institutions have grown adept at charging more while delivering arguably less of the thing nominally purchased: across the sector, costs have escalated even as the share devoted to instruction has thinned, while administrative ranks have swelled and amenities have multiplied. The student pays a premium for teaching whose proportion of the bill quietly contracts. There remains, of course, the signalling function—the suspicion that a diploma certifies diligence and aptitude already present rather than skills freshly conferred. If so, much of the expenditure purchases not learning but a verifiable badge of it. Seen this way, students engage in a kind of arbitrage, buying a credential at one price and trading on its presumed worth at another, betting that the labour market will honour the gap. For any single individual the wager is perfectly reasonable. But when every aspirant places the identical bet, the scarcity that underwrote the credential's value dissolves, and the anticipated advantage evaporates in the aggregate. The economics of higher education, in the end, may be less a market clearing than a collective predicament dressed in the language of personal choice.

Which statement best captures the central argument of the passage?

  • Higher education increasingly resists the consumer logic conventionally invoked to defend its rising cost.
  • Universities should abolish tuition fees because graduates rarely recoup their investment.
  • Government subsidies are the sole remedy for the inflation of educational credentials.
  • The signalling function of a degree has wholly displaced any genuine cultivation of skill.
Phrase

Choice Analysis

Higher education increasingly resists the consumer logic conventionally invoked to defend its rising cost.

正解

冒頭で「a transaction whose value can be tabulated」という前提を提示しつつ、第2段で signalling と positional good の議論を通じてその前提が崩れることを示す。

  • Universities should abolish tuition fees because graduates rarely recoup their investment.

  • The signalling function of a degree has wholly displaced any genuine cultivation of skill.

  • Government subsidies are the sole remedy for the inflation of educational credentials.

A practice conventionally defended on tradition.
例文
  • The author resists the tidy metaphor of education as a purchase.

  • Tuition is conventionally defended as an investment in future earnings.

  • Such reasoning tabulates value the way a balance sheet would.

  • Yet the ledger stubbornly refuses to balance.

2

According to the passage, why does a degree function as a 'positional good'?

  • It confers benefits chiefly through the specialised knowledge transmitted in lectures.
  • Its advantage derives from holding it when comparatively few others do, so universal attainment erodes the benefit.
  • Its value rises in direct proportion to the total number of graduates a country produces.
  • It guarantees a fixed wage premium that is unaffected by the conduct of other workers.
Phrase

positional good の定義

Choice Analysis

Its advantage derives from holding it when comparatively few others do, so universal attainment erodes the benefit.

正解

第2段で学位を positional good と呼び、「its worth lies less in what it imparts than in who is excluded from holding it」と明記する。

  • Its value rises in direct proportion to the total number of graduates that a country produces each year.

  • It guarantees a fixed wage premium that is unaffected by the conduct of other workers.

  • It confers benefits chiefly through the specialised knowledge transmitted in lectures.

Collocation
positional good地位財Housing near elites is a positional good.
Its prestige derives from scarcity.
Inflation erodes the benefit.
Comparatively few attain it.
Universal attainment dilutes status.
例文
  • A diploma's worth derives partly from its relative scarcity.

  • When everyone graduates, the positional advantage erodes.

  • The good's benefit hinges on who is excluded.

  • Comparatively few once held such credentials.

3

What does the passage indicate about the relationship between rising tuition and instructional quality?

  • Higher fees have been channelled overwhelmingly into smaller class sizes.
  • Administrative spending has fallen sharply to protect funds for instruction.
  • Tuition and teaching expenditure have risen together at roughly the same pace.
  • Costs have escalated even as the proportion spent on actual teaching has shrunk relative to administration.
Phrase

Choice Analysis

Costs have escalated even as the proportion spent on actual teaching has shrunk relative to administration.

正解

第3段で「the share devoted to instruction has thinned even as administrative ranks have swelled」と述べる。

  • Tuition and teaching expenditure have risen together at roughly the same pace over the decades.

  • Higher fees have been channelled overwhelmingly into smaller class sizes.

  • Administrative spending has fallen sharply to protect funds for instruction.

Collocation
the share devoted to〜に充てられた割合The share devoted to research grew.
Margins have thinned.
Administrative ranks swelled.
Costs escalated sharply.
Wages fell relative to prices.
例文
  • Tuition escalated while teaching budgets thinned.

  • Administrative ranks have swelled in recent decades.

  • The share devoted to instruction kept shrinking.

  • Spending rose relative to enrolment.
