EigoPro 1級 読解 — The Rhetoric of Flexibility: Gig Work and the Vocabulary of Freedom

Few economic transformations have been packaged so seductively as the rise of the gig economy. Platforms extol "flexibility," "autonomy," and "being your own boss"—a lexicon that recasts precariousness as liberation. Yet this vocabulary is not innocent; it performs ideological labor, displacing scrutiny from the structures that govern such work onto the ostensibly empowered individual. By classifying workers as independent contractors rather than employees, firms divest themselves of the obligations that historically accompanied employment: minimum wages, sick leave, pension contributions, and protection against arbitrary dismissal. Proponents insist the arrangement is mutually beneficial. Workers, they argue, gain the discretion to choose when and how much they labor, while consumers enjoy cheaper, more responsive services. There is something to this. Many drivers and couriers genuinely prize the absence of a fixed schedule, and for those juggling caregiving or study, intermittent earnings can prove invaluable. To dismiss these testimonies as false consciousness would be condescending. Nevertheless, the asymmetry of power belies the language of partnership. Algorithms, opaque and unaccountable, dictate rates, allocate tasks, and penalize refusals, leaving the supposed entrepreneur with the form of autonomy but little of its substance. The flexibility, on closer inspection, accrues disproportionately to the platform, which can scale its workforce up or down without absorbing any of the attendant costs. What is marketed as freedom frequently amounts to the externalization of risk onto those least able to bear it. The contractor designation, then, is less a neutral description than a juridical sleight of hand. Whether it empowers or expropriates depends not on the rhetoric but on the concrete distribution of leverage—and that distribution, in most jurisdictions, remains stubbornly lopsided. Courts and legislatures have begun, haltingly, to interrogate the fiction, reclassifying certain workers and imposing floors beneath their pay; yet platforms prove endlessly inventive, restructuring contracts faster than statutes can be drafted. Until regulation catches up with the architecture of these platforms, the celebrated flexibility will continue to function chiefly as a euphemism, dignifying with the borrowed language of choice an arrangement that workers did not design and cannot meaningfully contest.

Choice Analysis

The language of "flexibility" obscures a power imbalance that allows platforms to shift risk onto workers while withholding traditional protections.

本文は「the externalization of risk onto those least able to bear it」と明言し、柔軟性の実態がリスクの転嫁であると指摘する。

  • Gig work has decisively improved the lives of most workers by granting them genuine control over their schedules and earnings.

  • The classification of workers as contractors is a purely technical matter with no bearing on their rights or wellbeing.

  • Consumers are the principal victims of the gig economy because platforms raise prices to compensate for low wages.

Choice Analysis

Minimum wages, sick leave, pension contributions, and protection against arbitrary dismissal.

正解

第1段落は企業が「the obligations that historically accompanied employment: minimum wages, sick leave, pension contributions, and protection against arbitrary dismissal」を手放すと明示する。

  • Health insurance premiums, stock options, relocation allowances, and overtime bonuses.

  • Corporate income tax, advertising costs, platform maintenance, and software licensing fees.

  • Customer refunds, fuel subsidies, vehicle insurance, and training certification.

Choice Analysis

They are opaque and unaccountable, setting rates, assigning tasks, and penalizing refusals, leaving workers with autonomy in form but not substance.

正解

第3段落は「Algorithms, opaque and unaccountable, dictate rates, allocate tasks, and penalize refusals」と述べ、労働者には「the form of autonomy but little of its substance」しか残らないと論じる。

  • They transparently negotiate the pay with each individual worker so as to ensure a fair and mutually agreed rate for every task.
