Proponents frame it as prudent insurance, a temporary stopgap to buy time while emissions are slowly curbed. Yet the analogy is treacherous. The technique addresses surface temperature alone, leaving ocean acidification wholly untouched and doing nothing to dismantle the fossil-fuel economy whose continuation it quietly and tacitly licenses. Worse still, it courts the spectre of termination shock: should the aerosol veil be sustained for decades and then abruptly withdrawn, the suppressed warming would rebound with a violence no ecosystem could conceivably absorb. The deeper hazard, however, is moral and geopolitical. A planet whose climate is consciously engineered ceases to be a shared inheritance and becomes instead an object of contested governance, yet no legitimate authority exists to wield such formidable power. One region's optimal setting may parch another's monsoon; attribution of any subsequent drought becomes irresolvably contentious, a recipe for lasting grievance and possibly for war.
