EigoPro 準1級 読解 — Rewilding the Land

For more than a century, conservation in the West rested on a tidy assumption: that nature is best protected by fencing it off from human interference and freezing it in some pristine, prior state. Rewilding turns that logic on its head. Rather than maintaining a managed garden, its advocates argue, we should hand whole landscapes back to natural processes—letting rivers wander, forests advance, and large animals reshape the terrain as they see fit. The aim is not to preserve a snapshot of the past but to restore the dynamism that human activity has steadily suppressed. The most celebrated demonstration of this idea unfolded in Yellowstone. When wolves were reintroduced in 1995 after a seventy-year absence, they thinned and unsettled the elk herds that had been grazing the valleys unchecked. Willows and aspens, no longer browsed to stubble, recovered along the riverbanks; beavers returned to the regrown thickets; and the rivers themselves, stabilised by deeper roots, began to meander differently. A single predator, in other words, had rippled outward through the whole food web. To rewilders, the lesson is plain: remove the right species and an ecosystem can knit itself back together with remarkably little human help. Critics, however, caution against reading too much into one charismatic example. Reintroducing apex predators near farms and villages invites real conflict, and the rural communities who must live alongside returning wolves or lynx rarely share the enthusiasm of distant city-dwellers. There is also a deeper philosophical objection. If a landscape has been shaped by human hands for thousands of years—as much of Europe has—then "wild" is not a baseline waiting to be recovered but a romantic fiction. Letting nature take its course, the skeptics warn, may simply mean abandoning land to whatever happens to colonise it. What both camps share, perhaps, is a recognition that the old model of conservation-as-preservation is exhausted. The argument is no longer about whether landscapes will change, but about how much control we are willing to surrender, and to whom the wilder future ultimately belongs.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Rewilding proposes returning control of landscapes to natural processes, an approach that is promising but contested.
  • The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone has proved that predators harm ecosystems.
  • Scientists now agree that all human management of nature should be abandoned immediately.
  • Traditional conservation has succeeded everywhere except in the rural communities of Europe.
Phrase

we should hand whole landscapes back to natural processes

Choice Analysis

Rewilding proposes returning control of landscapes to natural processes, an approach that is promising but contested.

正解

第1段でリワイルディングを『景観を自然の過程に返すこと (hand whole landscapes back to natural processes)』と定義し、第2段で Yellowstone の成功例を、第3段で批判 (Critics, however, caution...)

  • The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone has proved that predators harm ecosystems.

  • Traditional conservation has succeeded everywhere except

  • Scientists now agree that all human management of nature should be abandoned immediately.

  • Rewilding hands whole landscapes back to natural processes.

  • The new theory turns the old logic on its head.

  • Their policy rested on a tidy assumption about nature.

2

According to the passage, what happened after wolves returned to Yellowstone?

  • Beavers were deliberately reintroduced by rangers to rebuild the thickets.
  • Elk populations grew rapidly because their main competitors had been removed.
  • Pressure on elk eased, allowing riverbank vegetation, beavers, and river channels to recover.
  • The rivers dried up once the predators destabilised the food web.
Phrase

Willows and aspens, no longer browsed to stubble, recovered along the riverbanks; beavers returned

Choice Analysis

Pressure on elk eased, allowing riverbank vegetation, beavers, and river channels to recover.

  • Elk populations grew rapidly

  • Beavers were deliberately reintroduced by rangers

  • The rivers dried up

  • The willows, no longer browsed to stubble, recovered quickly.

  • A single predator rippled outward through the whole food web.

  • Beavers returned to the regrown thickets on their own.

3

What philosophical objection to rewilding does the passage describe?

  • City-dwellers are legally barred from advocating rural land policy.
  • Apex predators cannot survive in any landscape shaped by humans.
  • Rewilding is too expensive for most national governments to fund.
  • In long-inhabited regions, a truly "wild" baseline never existed, so there is nothing pristine to recover.
Phrase

"wild" is not a baseline waiting to be recovered but a romantic fiction

Choice Analysis

In long-inhabited regions, a truly "wild" baseline never existed, so there is nothing pristine to recover.

  • too expensive for most national governments

  • Apex predators cannot survive in any landscape shaped by humans

  • City-dwellers are now legally barred from advocating any rural land-use policy of any kind.
