EigoPro 準1級 読解 — The Decline of Deep Reading

Reading has never been a single, uniform activity. The slow, immersive absorption of a long novel is a fundamentally different cognitive feat from the rapid, fragmented scanning we perform when navigating a news feed. For much of human history the two coexisted comfortably, but a growing chorus of critics now argues that the digital environment is quietly tilting the balance, training us to skim relentlessly while eroding our capacity to sink into a demanding text. The worry is not that people read less—by some measures they read more words per day than ever—but that the kind of reading they do has changed in character. The mechanism, proponents of this view contend, is one of habituation. The screen rewards speed: hyperlinks beckon, notifications interrupt, and the very layout of a webpage invites the eye to dart rather than dwell. Read this way for hours each day, the brain gradually adapts, optimising itself for breadth at the expense of depth. When such a reader then opens a dense work of philosophy or a layered piece of literary fiction, the patient, linear concentration it demands feels unnatural, even uncomfortable. The fear, in short, is that we are rewiring ourselves out of an ability that took years of schooling to acquire. Sceptics counter that this narrative leans heavily on nostalgia rather than evidence. Anxieties about new media corrupting the mind are perennial: Socrates distrusted writing itself, and the nineteenth century fretted that cheap novels would rot young minds. Moreover, the brain's plasticity cuts both ways. If it can adapt to skimming, it can presumably readapt to depth, provided we deliberately make room for it. The more measured conclusion may be that deep reading is not vanishing but becoming a discipline—something that, like any demanding skill, must now be consciously cultivated rather than passively assumed. Whether a culture saturated with frictionless distraction will choose to cultivate it is, of course, another question entirely.

  • Deep reading has already disappeared and cannot be recovered by any means.
  • Critics and sceptics agree that new media inevitably corrupts the human mind.
  • Digital habits may be weakening our capacity for deep reading, though whether this is inevitable remains contested.
Phrase

the kind of reading they do has changed in character

本文全体は「デジタル習慣が深い読書能力を損ないつつあるが、不可避かは議論中」という論旨。

選択肢の解説Choice Analysis

Digital habits may be weakening our capacity for deep reading, though whether this is inevitable remains contested.

正解

本文は (1) 読書には没入型と斜め読み型の二種があり→ (2) デジタル環境が後者に傾けていると批判者が主張→ (3) 懐疑派は根拠より郷愁だと反論、という対立構図で展開する。最終段で『深い読書は消えるのではなく意識的に培う技能になる』とまとめ、結論は両論併記。したがって「デジタル習慣が深い読書能力を損ないうるが、それが不可避かは議論が続く」が主旨。

  • Digital technology has caused people to read far fewer words

    = デジタルで読む語数が激減した ━ 本文は『語数では過去最多かもしれない』と明言しており、量ではなく質の変化が論点。

  • Deep reading has already disappeared and cannot be recovered

    = 深い読書は既に消滅し回復不能 ━ 最終段は『消えるのではなく培う技能になる』と述べ、回復可能性を残しているので言い過ぎ。

  • Critics and sceptics agree that new media inevitably corrupts

    = 批判者と懐疑派は新媒体が必ず精神を蝕むと合意 ━ 両者は対立しており、懐疑派はその不安を郷愁だと退けているので正反対。

例文
  • The digital environment is quietly tilting the balance toward skimming.

    デジタル環境は静かに均衡を斜め読みへと傾けている。

  • Critics fear screens erode our capacity for sustained attention.

    批判者は画面が持続的集中力を損なうと懸念する。

  • It is the character of reading, not its quantity, that has changed.

    変わったのは読書の量ではなく性質だ。

主旨設問は対立構図の論説では『両論併記+最終段の落とし所』を探す。本文は批判→反論→中庸 (more measured conclusion) という三段構え。

2

According to the passage, why do critics say screens encourage skimming?

  • Screens display text too slowly for sustained concentration.
  • Features such as hyperlinks, notifications, and page layout invite the eye to move quickly rather than linger.
  • Screens physically prevent the eye from focusing on any single word.
  • Digital texts are deliberately written to be shorter than printed ones.
Phrase

画面はハイパーリンク・通知・レイアウトによって目を『留める』より『跳ばせる』。

選択肢の解説Choice Analysis

Features such as hyperlinks, notifications, and page layout invite the eye to move quickly rather than linger.

正解

第2段で『hyperlinks beckon, notifications interrupt, and the very layout of a webpage invites the eye to dart rather than dwell』と具体的に列挙する。dart (素早く動く) rather than dwell (留まる) を『move quickly rather than linger』と言い換えた選択肢が正解。

  • physically prevent the eye from focusing

    = 目の焦点を物理的に妨げる ━ 本文は物理的阻害ではなく『跳ばすよう誘う (invites)』と述べており強すぎる。

  • Digital texts are deliberately written to be much shorter than printed ones usually are today.

    = 印刷物より短く書かれている ━ テキストの長さの話は本文になく、誘導される視線の動きが論点。

  • display text too slowly

    = 表示が遅すぎる ━ 画面が報いるのは speed であって遅さではない。正反対。

Collocation
パターン意味
invite the eye to dart目を跳ばすよう誘うThe layout invites the eye to dart.
dwell on ~~に留まる・じっくり見るrather than dwell on the page
reward speed速さに報いるThe screen rewards speed.
optimise for breadth広さに最適化するThe brain optimises for breadth.

例文
  • Notifications interrupt the slow work of concentration.

    通知は集中という遅い作業を妨げる。

  • Hyperlinks beckon the reader away from the main text.

    ハイパーリンクは読者を本文から誘い出す。

  • The brain optimises itself for breadth at the expense of depth.

    脳は深さを犠牲にして広さに最適化していく。

💡Tip · 覚えるコツ

detail 設問は本文の具体列挙 (A, B, and C) を『such as A, B, and C』で要約した選択肢が正解になりやすい。dart→move quickly, dwell→linger の置換に注目。

3

How do sceptics respond to the worry about deep reading?

  • They deny that the way people read has changed in any respect at all.
  • They argue the concern relies on nostalgia, noting that fears about new media recur in history and that the brain can readapt.
  • They claim that deep reading was never a valuable skill to begin with.
  • They insist that the brain's plasticity makes any change permanent and irreversible.
Phrase

this narrative leans heavily on nostalgia rather than evidence

懐疑派=不安は根拠より郷愁、歴史的に繰り返す不安、脳の可塑性は再適応も可能と反論。

選択肢の解説Choice Analysis

They argue the concern relies on nostalgia, noting that fears about new media recur in history and that the brain can readapt.

正解

第3段で懐疑派は (1) この語りは『nostalgia rather than evidence』に依拠、(2) ソクラテスや19世紀の例で『anxieties ... are perennial』、(3) 『the brain's plasticity cuts both ways』で再適応も可能、と反論する。これら三点を束ねた選択肢が正解。

  • deep reading was never a valuable skill

    = 深い読書は元々価値のない技能 ━ 懐疑派はそうは言わず、再適応できると述べているだけ。本文にない。

  • They insist that the brain's plasticity makes any such change permanent and quite irreversible in most adults.

    = 変化を永続的で不可逆にする ━ plasticity cuts both ways=双方向に働く、つまり再適応可能なので正反対。

  • They deny that the way people read has changed in any respect at all.

    = 読み方が変わったこと自体を否定 ━ 懐疑派が否定するのは『不可避の劣化』であって変化の事実そのものではない。

例文
  • The argument leans on nostalgia rather than hard evidence.

    その議論は確固たる証拠より郷愁に依拠している。

  • The brain's plasticity cuts both ways.

    脳の可塑性は両刃の剣だ。

  • We must deliberately make room for slow, deep reading.

    我々は意識的に遅く深い読書の余地を作らねばならない。

💡Tip · 覚えるコツ

複数論点をまとめた長い選択肢は、各論点が本文に対応するか一つずつ照合する。『cuts both ways』は『再適応も可能』の含意なので irreversible 肢は即除外。
