世界的に議論される民主主義の後退について論じた硬めの論説を読みます。準1級レベルの政治・社会語彙と、論点を追いながら筆者の主張を捉える読解技術が身につきます。
問題は「量」ではなく「質」
The worry is not that people read less—by some measures they read more words per day than ever—but that the kind of reading they do has changed in character.（読む量が減ったのではなく、読み方の性質が変わった）と、争点が明示されます。
「読書量が減った」型の選択肢は誤答です。
結論は「消える」ではなく「規律になる」
The more measured conclusion may be that deep reading is not vanishing but becoming a discipline—something that … must now be consciously cultivated rather than passively assumed.（深い読書は消えつつあるのではなく、意識的に育てるべき規律になっている）が穏当な結論です。
