The cliché that a poem is "what gets lost in translation" has hardened into received wisdom, and it is not hard to see why. Faced with such gaps, the sceptic concludes that translation is at best a noble failure—a faded photocopy of an unreachable original. Yet this verdict mistakes the nature of the enterprise. Translation is not transcription but interpretation, and interpretation can illuminate as much as it obscures. A gifted translator does not merely swap words; she rebuilds the architecture of a sentence so that its rhythm, its irony, its hesitations survive the crossing. When Seamus Heaney rendered the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf into modern English, he did not produce a museum replica; he made a living poem that sent thousands of readers back to a text they would otherwise never have opened. What was "lost" was outweighed by what was suddenly found—a readership, a resonance, an afterlife. Indeed, the very untranslatability that purists lament can become a creative engine. Confronted with a word that has no equivalent, the translator must improvise, coin, or stretch the target language, and in doing so she enlarges it.
