EigoPro 準1級 読解 — The Making of Experts

We are fond of crediting genius. The chess grandmaster, the concert violinist, the surgeon whose hands never falter—each seems to possess a gift that the rest of us simply lack. Yet decades of research into the psychology of expertise tell a less romantic story. When the psychologist Anders Ericsson studied elite performers across fields as varied as music, athletics, and medicine, he found that the single most reliable predictor of mastery was not innate talent but the accumulation of a particular kind of effort he called "deliberate practice." Deliberate practice is not mere repetition. Hammering out the same scales for an hour, or replaying a game one already knows how to win, produces little improvement; such activity is comfortable, and comfort is precisely the enemy. What distinguishes deliberate practice is that it is effortful and uncomfortable by design. The learner works at the very edge of current ability, attacking specific weaknesses, courting failure, and relying on immediate, often harsh, feedback to correct each error before it hardens into habit. This is why a coach or teacher matters so much: an outside eye can identify the flaws that the performer, lulled by familiarity, can no longer perceive. The implications are bracing. If expertise is largely built rather than bestowed, then the comforting excuse of "I'm just not gifted" begins to dissolve. But the theory has its critics. Talent, they argue, has not been banished so much as relocated: some people may possess a greater capacity to sustain the grinding concentration that deliberate practice demands. Moreover, thousands of hours of training are useless without access to good teachers, leisure time, and early encouragement—resources distributed by accident of birth. The democratic promise of deliberate practice, then, comes with a quiet caveat. Effort may indeed forge expertise, but the opportunity to exert it is not handed out equally.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Expertise depends far more on a demanding, focused kind of practice than on inborn talent, though opportunity to practise is unevenly distributed.
  • Innate genius is the only reliable predictor of mastery across professional fields.
  • Repeating a skill for thousands of hours guarantees that anyone can become an elite performer.
  • Coaches and teachers are unnecessary once a learner has accumulated enough practice.
Phrase

the single most reliable predictor of mastery was not innate talent but ... deliberate practice

Choice Analysis

Expertise depends far more on a demanding, focused kind of practice than on inborn talent, though opportunity to practise is unevenly distributed.

  • Innate genius alone is the only reliable predictor there is of mastery right across every one of the professional fields.

  • Simply repeating a skill for many thousands of hours will guarantee that absolutely anyone can become an elite performer.

  • Coaches and teachers alike become entirely unnecessary once a learner has accumulated a sufficient number of practice hours.

  • Effort, not luck, was the most reliable predictor of success.

  • Mastery is built rather than bestowed.

  • The promise comes with a quiet caveat.

2

According to the passage, what distinguishes deliberate practice from ordinary repetition?

  • It avoids failure in order to keep the learner motivated and relaxed.
  • It is deliberately effortful and uncomfortable, targeting specific weaknesses with immediate feedback.
  • It relies on repeatedly performing tasks the learner has already mastered.
  • It can only be carried out alone, without any outside guidance.

Choice Analysis

It is deliberately effortful and uncomfortable, targeting specific weaknesses with immediate feedback.

正解

第2段で『単なる反復ではない』と前置きし、deliberate practice を effortful and uncomfortable by design・attacking specific weaknesses・relying on immediate ... feedback と特徴づける。

  • It relies upon repeatedly performing only the tasks that the learner has already mastered.

  • It carefully avoids all failure in order to keep the learner both motivated and relaxed.

  • It can only ever be carried out entirely alone, without any form of outside guidance at all.

  • Real progress is uncomfortable by design.

  • She works at the very edge of her ability.

  • Correct the error before it hardens into habit.

3

What objection do critics of the theory raise, according to the third paragraph?

  • Ericsson's research deliberately excluded fields outside of music.
  • Talent may still matter as a capacity to sustain intense concentration, and the resources needed to practise are not equally available.
  • Deliberate practice has been shown to harm elite performers over time.
  • Most experts in fact achieve mastery without any practice at all.
Phrase

Choice Analysis

Talent may still matter as a capacity to sustain intense concentration, and the resources needed to practise are not equally available.

  • Deliberate practice of this kind has been repeatedly shown to harm even the elite performers over the longer term.

  • Most of the experts who were studied in fact achieved their mastery without doing any deliberate practice at all.

  • Ericsson's original research deliberately excluded every single field of expertise lying outside of music itself.

  • Opportunity is not handed out equally.
