EigoPro 準1級 読解 — The Myth of the Infallible Clue

Few beliefs are as comforting, or as stubborn, as the conviction that physical evidence does not lie. Fingerprints, bite marks, hair, the spatter of blood—on screen and in the courtroom these are presented as silent witnesses whose testimony is beyond dispute. Yet a series of official reviews has reached a disquieting conclusion: many of the techniques that have sent people to prison for decades rest on far shakier ground than their courtroom authority implies. Some, on close inspection, were never validated by rigorous experiment at all. The trouble is rarely the underlying trace itself but the human judgement laid upon it. An examiner asked whether two fingerprints "match" is making a subjective comparison, not reading a barcode, and studies show that the same expert may reach different verdicts on different days. Worse, knowing that a suspect has confessed can nudge an analyst, however honest, towards seeing a match that the prints alone would not support. The evidence acquires an aura of objectivity it has not earned, and a jury, dazzled by the white coat, rarely thinks to ask how the conclusion was reached. None of this means the techniques are worthless; a fingerprint can still be powerful corroboration. What it demands is humility—the reporting of error rates, the blinding of analysts to irrelevant facts, the candid admission that a probability is not a certainty. The deepest reform, however, is cultural. So long as we crave the reassurance of the unmistakable clue, we will keep mistaking the confidence of an expert for the reliability of a method, and the courtroom will keep rewarding certainty over truth.

主旨は『権威ほど客観でない + 謙虚さが要る』の二点を含む肢を採る。本文が明示否定する両極端 (never lies / worthless) は罠。陪審は『懐疑的』でなく『信じ過ぎ』である点も確認。

It can nudge even an honest analyst towards seeing a match the prints alone would not support.

正解

第2段で knowing that a suspect has confessed can nudge an analyst, however honest, towards seeing a match that the prints alone would not support と述べる。よって『誠実でも指紋単独では支持されぬ一致を見る方へ傾く』が正解。
