It is important to study のような形式主語 it + to不定詞の構文を学びます。長い主語をすっきり表現するコツを理解し、3級レベルの自然な英文が作れるようになります。
ルール —it は仮の主語
To read books is important. のように to 不定詞が主語になると頭が重くなるため、英語では仮の主語 it を置き、本当の主語を後ろに回して It is important to read books. とします。
この it は「それ」と訳しません。
〈It is ＋ 形容詞 ＋ to ＋ 原形〉が基本の型です。
使い方 —for と of の使い分け
動作をする人を示すときは for 人 が基本です。
ただし kind / nice / careless など「その人の性格」を評価する形容詞のときは of 人 を使います。
「あなたは親切だ」という判断が入るかどうかが分かれ目です。
つまずきやすい所
○ It is difficult for me to read this book.
✗ It is difficult of me to read this book.
difficult は性格の評価ではないので for。
○ It is kind of you to help me.
✗ It is kind for you to help me.
kind は人の性格を評価する形容詞なので of。
○ It is important to study every day.
✗ It is important studying every day.
形式主語の it が指すのは to 不定詞。-ing にはしない。
長い主語は it に置き換えて後ろへ。for と of の使い分けは「性格の評価かどうか」で決まります。
