much/many、(a) few/(a) little、several、plenty of など数量を表す語を可算/不可算の軸で整理します。準1級で狙われる肯定・否定のニュアンス差まで理解し、正確に使えるようになります。
a が付くかで評価が反転する
a few / a little は「少しはある」（肯定的）、a のない few / little は「ほとんどない」（否定的）。
この差は主張の向きを決めるので、読解でも重要です。
much は肯定の平叙文では避けられ、否定文・疑問文や too much / so much / how much と組みます。
肯定文では a lot of / a great deal of / plenty of を使います。
使い方 —a large number of は複数扱い、the number of は単数扱い
a large number of ＋ 複数名詞は核が複数名詞なので動詞も複数（A large number of volunteers are working.）。
一方 the number of ＋ 複数名詞は「数」が核なので単数（The number of applicants has increased.）。
この対比は一致の問題で頻出です。
amount は不可算に、number は可算に使います（a large amount of water / a large number of people）。
つまずきやすい所
○ He has a lot of money.
✗ He has much money.（肯定の平叙文で）
肯定文の much は不自然。a lot of / a great deal of を使う。
○ The number of applicants has increased.
✗ The number of applicants have increased.
the number of は「数」が核なので単数。
○ a large number of people
✗ a large amount of people
可算名詞には number、不可算には amount。
数量詞は「a の有無で評価が反転する」点と一致の判定が要点です。
