準1級で頻出する応用的な句動詞をテーマ別に攻略します。一語の動詞では表せないニュアンスを理解し、会話でも読解でも通用する自然な表現力を養います。
格式版と口語版の対応
同じ意味を1語の動詞（ラテン語系）と句動詞（本来語系）の両方で言えます。
書き言葉では1語動詞、会話では句動詞が好まれます。
account for ＝ explain、do away with ＝ abolish、put up with ＝ tolerate / endure、live up to ＝ meet / fulfil、come down to ＝ 本質・決定要因を述べる表現です。
使い方 —3語の群動詞は分離できない
put up with / do away with / come down to のような3語の群動詞は、目的語が代名詞でも語順を変えられません（put up with it ○ / put it up with ✕）。
一方 2語の他動詞型（put off / call off / turn down）は代名詞なら間に入れます（put it off）。
この分離の可否が空所補充で問われます。
つまずきやすい所
○ put up with it
✗ put it up with
3語の群動詞は分離できない。
○ account for the discrepancy
✗ account of the discrepancy（説明する意味で）
「説明する」は for。on account of は「〜のため」。
○ live up to expectations
✗ live up with expectations
to で固定。
句動詞は「1語動詞との対応」と「分離できるか」の2点で覚えます。
