語源で地形語を覚える
peninsula は paene（ほとんど）＋ insula（島）＝「ほとんど島」で、insular / isolate と同族。
archipelago は archi（主要な）＋ pelago（海）。
terrain は terra（大地。territory / terrestrial と同族）で「地形・地勢」。
excursion は ex（外）＋ cur（走る。current / recur / incur と同族）で「外へ走り出る」＝ 小旅行。
itinerary は iter（旅。itinerant ＝ 巡回の）から。
使い方 —customs / excursion / itinerary の型
customs は「税関」の意味では常に複数（go through customs）。
単数の custom は「慣習」で別語です。
excursion は日帰り〜短期の小旅行、expedition は探検・遠征と規模が違います。
itinerary は「旅程表」という書面性があり、schedule より旅行に特化した語です。
terrain は rough / mountainous terrain のように形容詞と組んで使います。
つまずきやすい所

税関は常に複数形。単数 custom は「慣習」。

excursion は日帰り規模。探検・遠征は expedition。

同語源だが指すものが違う。
地形語は語源分解で覚え、customs の複数形と規模の語の住み分けを外さないことが要点です。
