批判を「反論」ではなく「設計条件」として扱う
These objections are not trivial, and the wisest reformers treat them as design constraints rather than refutations.(これらの反論は些末ではなく、賢明な改革者はそれを反駁ではなく設計上の制約として扱う)が要点です。
批判を退けalso認めもしない第三の処理で、準1級の論説で頻出します。
結論は「現状も選択である」
What unites both camps … is a recognition that the status quo is itself a choice—one made decades ago and renewed every time a city pours concrete for another lane.(現状もまた選択であり、車線を1本増やすたびに更新されている)が両陣営の一致点です。
最後は it has forced cities to ask not merely how traffic should flow, but for whom the city exists(交通の流し方だけでなく、都市は誰のためにあるのかを問わせた)と締めます。
つまずきやすい所
