1978年にケスラーが警告した内容は beyond a certain density, collisions would generate new fragments faster than atmospheric drag could clear them away(一定の密度を超えると、大気の抗力が除去するより速く破片が生まれる)。
Solutions exist on paper—nets, harpoons, lasers, and tugs—but every one of them runs into the same wall.(紙の上の解決策はあるが、すべて同じ壁に当たる)→ Why should one nation shoulder the cost of disposing of another's discarded hardware?(なぜ一国が他国の廃棄物処理費を負うのか)。
解決しない限り the technology will remain a series of promising demonstrations rather than a working service(実用サービスではなく有望な実演のまま)です。
even a fleck of paint can puncture。
runs into the same wall(incentive problem)。
no longer a distant hypothetical。
