despite / in spite of / owing to / due to / by means of。句前置詞は品詞と格式で選びます。
節を取れないものを押さえる
despite / in spite of は前置詞なので節を続けられません。
節にしたいなら although、または despite the fact that 〜。
due to は伝統的には形容詞句で be 動詞の補語位置が正統（The delay was due to fog.）、副詞的に文頭で使うなら owing to / because of が安全です。
by means of は「〜という手段で」で by より具体的な道具立てを示します。
書き言葉での選び分け
格式は owing to / by means of ＞ despite / in spite of ＞ because of の順。
論文では The delay was due to a supply shortage.（補語位置）と Owing to a supply shortage, the launch slipped.（文頭）を使い分けます。
despite the fact that は冗長になりやすいので、節なら although を選ぶほうが締まります。
つまずきやすい所

despite は節を取らない。
