前置詞 ＋ which / 数量詞 ＋ of which / whose / , which / whereby。格式の高い関係詞です。
pied-piping（前置詞前置）が学術の標準
the manner in which S V のように前置詞を関係詞の前に出す形（pied-piping）は、句末に前置詞を残す形より格段に格式が高く、論文の標準です。
that は前置詞の直後にも非制限用法にも使えません。
whose は物にも使え（a company whose profits fell）、of which より簡潔です。
コンマ ＋ which は前の節全体を先行詞にできます。
whereby と in which の違い
whereby は by which の意味で「その仕組みによって」を表し、an arrangement whereby costs are shared のように制度・方式の説明に使います。
in which は場所・状況（the manner in which / the way in which）。
どちらも先行詞が抽象名詞のときに選ばれるので、意味（手段か状況か）で決めます。
つまずきやすい所
○ … in which …
✗ the manner in that the study was conducted
that は前置詞の直後に置けない。
○ …, which annoyed everyone.
✗ He was late, that annoyed everyone.
非制限用法に that は使えない。
○ most of whom had no experience
✗ fifty graduates, most of them had no experience
them では節をつなげない。
that が使えない位置を覚えるのが最短。whereby と in which は意味で選びます。
