although / even though / even if / whereas で「〜だけれども」「たとえ〜でも」を表します。事実か仮定かで語が変わります。
ルール —事実なら even though、仮定なら even if
although / even though は実際の事実を譲歩し、even if は仮定（未実現）を譲歩します。
whereas は2者の対比のみを表し、時間の意味は持ちません（while は時間と対比の両方）。
いずれも後ろは節です。
使い方 —although と but は重ねない
Although it rained, we went out. と It rained, but we went out. は同じ意味ですが、Although ... but ... と重ねるのは誤りです。
名詞を続けたいときは despite / in spite of を使います（Despite the rain）。
つまずきやすい所
○ Although it rained, we went out.
✗ Although it rained, but we went out.
although と but は重ねられない。
○ Even if it rains tomorrow, …
✗ Even though it rains tomorrow, …
未実現の仮定は even if。
○ Despite the rain, … / Although it rained, …
✗ Despite it rained, …
despite の後ろは名詞。
事実か仮定かで語を選び、後ろが節か名詞かで although と despite を分けます。
