There is/There areを使って「〜がある・いる」を表す基本文型を学びます。単数・複数による使い分けや疑問文・否定文の作り方を整理し、5級の重要表現を確実に身につけます。
ルール —後ろの名詞に合わせて is / are を選ぶ
There is ＋ 単数（There is a cat.）、There are ＋ 複数（There are two cats.）です。
ここでの There は「そこに」とは訳しません。
a / an が付く名詞は単数なので is、2以上の数字＋複数形なら are になります。
使い方 —場所を表す語をセットで置く
There is / are の文は、後ろに on the desk / in the box / near here のような場所の語が続くのがふつうです。
疑問文は Is there 〜? と倒置し、答えは Yes, there is. / No, there is not. と there をそのまま使います。
つまずきやすい所
○ There is a cat on the chair.
✗ There are a cat on the chair.
後ろが単数なら is。
○ There are two cats.
✗ There is two cats.
2以上なら are。
○ — Yes, there is.
✗ Is there a park? — Yes, it is.
答えでも there を使う。
後ろの名詞の数で is / are を選ぶ。答え方も there を使うのが決まりです。
