準1級レベルの高度な関係詞を学びます。非制限用法、前置詞+関係代名詞、関係副詞、whose や複合関係詞まで扱い、長く込み入った文を正確に組み立て・読み解く力が身につきます。
前置詞前置と非制限用法
前置詞を関係詞の前に出す形（in which / with whom / for which）は改まった書き言葉です。
口語では which … in のように文末に残します。
コンマ付きの非制限用法では、数量詞 ＋ of whom / of which で集団を分割でき（fifty graduates, many of whom …）、, which は前の文・節の内容全体を先行詞にできます。
使い方 —them では節をつなげない
fifty graduates, many of them had no experience とすると、接続語がないまま2つの文が並ぶ誤りになります。
many of whom と関係代名詞にするか、セミコロンで区切ります。
that は制限用法専用で、コンマ付きや前置詞の直後には使えません（× the manner in that）。
, which が前文全体を受ける用法は「そのことが〜」と訳します。
つまずきやすい所
○ fifty graduates, many of whom had no experience
✗ fifty graduates, many of them had no experience
them では節をつなげない。
○ the manner in which the project was conceived
✗ the manner in that the project was conceived
that は前置詞の直後に置けない。
○ He arrived late, which made a bad impression.
✗ He arrived late, that made a bad impression.
非制限用法では that を使えない。
関係詞の応用は「that が使えない位置」を覚えるのが最短です。them と whom の区別も頻出です。
