be on the verge of / be about to / be due to / was going to / 現在進行形。近さと確度で選びます。
近さ・公式度・確度の3軸
be about to（今すぐ）＜ be on the verge of ＋ 名詞・動名詞（瀬戸際。重い事態）／be due to ＋ 原形は公式の予定（時刻表・議事）。
現在進行形は相手と取り決め済みの個人的予定（I'm meeting her at six.）。
was / were going to は過去の時点での予定で、しばしば未実現を含意します。
未実現の含みを読む
I was going to call you, but … のように、was going to は「するつもりだったが、しなかった」を含意します。
be due to は形が be to（batch の別回）と似ていますが、due が入ると「予定表に載っている」感じが強まります。
on the verge of の後ろは名詞か動名詞で、to 不定詞は取りません。
つまずきやすい所
○ on the verge of collapse / of collapsing

of ＋ 名詞・動名詞。
○ 多くは未実現の含み
✗ was going to を実行した意味で読む
but が続くのが典型。
○ 予定なら be due to ＋ 原形
✗ be due to ＋ 名詞（原因の due to と混同）
due to ＋ 名詞は「〜が原因で」。
