instead=副詞、後ろに何も付かない: "I had tea instead."

instead of=前置詞句、後ろに名詞 or 動名詞 (-ing): "instead of coffee"
"instead of drinking" — "instead" だけで前置詞のように使うのは誤り。
instead of vs rather than
instead of=〜の代わりに (置換): "tea instead of coffee"
rather than=〜よりむしろ (好み): "walk rather than run" — 微妙にニュアンス違い。
動名詞 (-ing) が必須
✗ "instead of to go" → ○ "instead of going" (instead of の後ろの動詞は -ing 形のみ)。Instead, 文頭
"Instead, ..." 単独で「代わりに」(前文と対比)。
