and・but・because・then など文をつなぐ接続詞や副詞を3級レベルで整理します。文と文の関係を示す語を使いこなし、まとまりのある英文が書けるようになります。
コア意味と使い方
however は副詞で、文頭に置いてコンマで区切ります（However, …）。
although / though は接続詞で、後ろに〈主語＋動詞〉を続けて1文にまとめます。
while は「〜する間に」と「〜だが（対比）」の2つの意味、unless は「〜しない限り」で if not と同じ働きです。
使い分け —however と although
however は副詞なので2つの文をつなぐ「接着」はできません。
1文にまとめたいときは although / though / but を使います。
unless は「〜しない限り」なので、後ろの動詞を否定形にしないのが原則です。
つまずきやすい所
○ It rained. However, we went out. / Although it rained, we went out.
✗ It rained however we went out.
however は副詞なので節をつなげない。
○ Although it rained, we went out.
✗ Although it rained, but we went out.
although と but を同時に使わない。
○ Unless you hurry, you will be late.
✗ Unless you don't hurry, you will be late.
unless 自体に否定の意味があるので二重否定にしない。
品詞（副詞か接続詞か）で置き方が決まります。unless の二重否定は特に注意。
